ADVICE : New 397's with Pirelli SottoZero

I've been offered the following from my local dealership at a price of £1,750 including TPMS. This seems a decent saving on RRP, but wondered what you guys think? Potentially going on a 330d XD.

"Brand New Set of 4 18" Double Spoke 397 Alloy rims fitted with 225/45R18 V Pirelli Winter SottoZero Run Flat Tyres"

A set of generic 18" Borbet wheels, with sottozero tyres and OEM TPMS valves, are available from mrwinterwheels for about £1260.

So it's not a bad deal, but not a brilliant one either.

I'd offer them £1500 to start with, you never know, you might get lucky ...

Not a great deal IMO. I picked up a set of band new 18" 405m's with (summer) tyres for £1000 last year from my local dealer. Looking on ebay I saw quite a few a similar prices some with summers and some with winters all from BMW dealers.

I'd say try a lower offer on this ebay listing, you have nothing to lose...

I bought a set from Lloyd Newcastle last year, I rang them up and did the deal deal cheaper than through eBay

It might be worth PM'ing the OP, if you don't mind sharing the information, to inform them of the deal you got. Perhaps they could match the deal with this knowledge in mind

No secret really, they were happy to reduce by the amount of the selling fees to eBay, I pushed and got another £100 off too

They are a good choice - they look good fitted and they work extremely well in the relevant cold conditions (see below) but I bought my set of these from another forum member on here last year for £750. Immaculate (albeit with one refurbed but done well) and with the Sottozero tyres with nearly full tread. So unless you really want brand new ones (I had no qualms about fitting second hand wheels to what was then a brand new car), I would seek out a used set and save yourself a lot of money.

Pushed the dealer and got him down to £1,650, won't go any lower than that. Ideally wait for some good condition used ones but might be pushing my luck!

I have a set of staggered (8"/8.5") oem 18" 397's FS in FG - no buckles/repairs etc - with tyres [sized for my M135i] but rear tyres are shot so open to fair offers inlc centre badges but no TPMS.

PM if interested

I would shop around. There are a surplus of some 18" wheels - the 400M in particular. My dealer took two sets of delivery mile 400M wheels, fitted them with sensors and new Sottozeros and sold them both to me for £900 per set. The other one was for a friend with a 335d. They have also sold me a set of winter wheels for our Mini.

I won't mention the name of the dealer, as they do like to sell winter sets at higher prices, and they were doing me a favour, but I suggest you shop around and try to take advantage of the surplus of 18" wheels. They had also offered the wheels alone at £75 a corner.

Ask the parts department whether they have any spare sets of 18" wheels, rather than asking about winter wheels straight away.

I've got a set of sottozeros and I think they're garbage in anything except actual snow. The pilot alpins I have too, are miles better.
The sottozeros seem to be the only BMW recommended run flat option though, but they're the equivalent of a midrange tyre really.

I would second this. I recently sold my Sottozeros, despite having loads of tread remaining, as I found them terrible. Poor ride, noisy, and actually very little grip in typical English winters (single digit temps and damp roads).

I have yet to try my replacement tyres (Goodyear Ultragrip 8), but once I do I'm going to write a little comparison review.

Thanks JD6...... done a ring around and best I can get is a set of delivery mileage set of 400m with Summer Bridgestone Potenza and TPMs for £750 delivered to my local dealership. Does that sound about right?
