The Genesis is a really nice car (test drove the 1st gen), but it's friggin' huge - seems almost as big as a 7 series.

Genesis is now a separate brand for their luxury line, like Lexus for Toyota. They will have 5 or 6 different models to compete against other luxury car offerings. This one is targeting the 3er and the c-class according to the article.

More competition is a good thing.

That car design is so far from production spec....

Front looks like a cross between an Audi and a Lexus; not my favorite. A former Audi designer works for Hyundai.

Shows design promise, but to me, a car is more than a beauty pageant, what goes on under the hood is where I focus my attention.

If Hyundai can turn the corner in making a car with cheap, corner cutting parts, it may work.

The Genesis was nice this past generation, but it lacked...driving character, for lack of a better term. It has all the appropriate luxury and performance trappings, but it wasn't inspiring to drive. But good on them for the competition. At its price point it's a hell of a car. And that warranty...

Spot on. But ya know, the Genesis targeted the type of driver who doesn't know/understand/care about driving character; this driver just wants things to "look" a certain way to them.

Lipstick on a pig is a phrase that comes to mind, but hey, there are different cars for different types of drivers.

I'm the type of driver who'll naturally gravitate towards a BMW because of how they drive.

Let's see it in production spec then get back to me.

Hopefully this thing will have more character than a fax machine. Koreans haven't quite figured that one out yet, or haven't cared to.

they annoying thing about them is that they are always mimicking some other brands design... First year the genesis looked like Mercedes, the one right now specially on the front has an Audi vibe and now this concept looks a little Aston Martinish... why can't you just make your own bloodline...

I don't think making a proper driver's car is quite as hard as BMW would like us to believe; GM made a more dynamic/engaging offering than the F30 in their first attempt (the ATS). Then again, GM has a long history with sports cars like the Corvette/Camaro, so they had a leg up. Hyundai has never demonstrated that they could make a car in any segment that's engaging to drive.

But then again, 15 years ago their quality was a joke, and now it's right up there with Toyota/Honda. So it appears the Koreans can accomplish anything they want if they set their minds to it.

Can it be that it were all so simple...

Designing a car, any car, with the regulations and laws that exist today is never easy man. Let's not simplify the work of engineers just because they've gotten so good at it.

Making an engaging, efficient, fast, safe, and balanced car is extremely difficult, then it's got to be attractive.

GM may have a strong history of sports cars, but this is the same company that made the Cavalier.

BMW is in the process of evolving with the changes of automotive and propulsion design philosophy and tech; going to be hit or miss for about one more generation of products.

Even still, what they do currently make is pretty damn good overall in comparison to the "current" competition.

It looks like a Lexus, Q50, and Aston Martin had an ugly baby IMO.

At least it stands out from the old version.

this is very true. i always wondered why aston martin didnt create more a fuss with that winged badge on the genesis, it looks very very similar. i like it though, its just that i am not sure whether the brands hyundai, kia and the likes evoke "luxury" in the luxury segment they're aiming at.

It's a concept car, which means virtually nothing about it is relevant. I'll comment when they introduce a production vehicle.

p.s. Concept cars are, in my opinion, a complete waste of time and resources...catering to the whim or hubris of the designer, with no basis in reality.

I never thought Toyota, Datsun, and Honda evoked luxury either. My crystal ball says the Genesis as a separate brand will do well. It may not attract many BMW customers, but remember BMW customer base is expanding with the softball offerings designed to attract a broader audience. If the new Genesis brand does it right they will be a force to deal with by the other car companies and a new cross shop option for a lot of drivers.

Let's check back in 5 years and see.

I can't see buying one either. I'm just saying the styling is bold (if not polarizing) and with Genesis broken out as a separate brand, Hyundai has come to participate in the big leagues. I wouldn't bet against them.
