Buying F series, N20 or B48 engine
I know this is chewed topic but let me get this stragiht in my head.
I am buying new car, i wanted to buy F series with diesel engines but after complaints all over again about timing chain i ditched that idea. This is a little bit off topic, but why, for example redesigned N47 engine in 2014 model, has same issues like 2008 models in E series with damn chain? Okay, main part now, 1. Where is chain positioned on N20 and B48, is it on the side closer to headlights or in the back like N47? 2. What are common issues on N20 and B48, what to watch for while checking up the engine and engine bay? 3. In general, are those reliable engines? Thanks in advance for answers |

The timing chain is at the back so replacing and servicing would require engine removal like the N20. The B series engines have a closed deck and were engineered based on lessons learned from the n series engines. They seem to have been more reliable but the cars are newer so it may take awhile to see what problems come up. One thing to note is that people tend to drive these cars harder and track them more than Honda accords and Toyota Camrys which can lead to accelerated wear of components in some cases so YMMV. This may explain some of the timing chain issues, for example. Any issues will be covered by warranty. I have the B58 which the B48 is based off of and haven't had any mechanical issues thus far.

The B48 is still too new to really know what long term mechanical issues it may face.
The N20/N26 is well established and documented. Generally speaking they are solid. The main recurring items across the majority of N20/N26 motors are NVLD (Leak diagnosis module), thermostat, 30k mile water pump, and timing chain and oil pump drive. All of which BMW has offered service bulletins and warranty work reimbursements. BMW has also offered a 7 year, 70k mile extended warranty on the timing chain and oil pump drive.

The G20 will be introduced with a B48TU which is improved version. N20 is somewhere reliable but with some isolated problems.
