My 328i served me well this morning... Totaled or not?
Hey all-
First off, both parties involved walked away from the crash. Earlier this morning, I was heading to grab a McDonalds breakfast sandwich before work. After getting the green left turn arrow on fairly wide boulevard... A 65-year old lady plowed through a red light in her Budget rental car and smoked my 328i halfway through my turn. Pretty heavy impact to feel. About 6 other cars were stopped at the red and saw the whole thing while this lady drove through a clear lane without seeing the light or my car. There were no tire marks visible as her foot never found the brake pedal. BTW - I still got my sausage biscuit with egg an hour later as the officer was writing the report. Totaled or Not? What do you think? Specs are... 2013 328i Sedan with Sport Line, Tech (Navi), Premium Packages with 26,000 miles in (previously) great condition. Purchased new in January 2013. Retail values on KBB/Edmunds/NADA Guide around $32-34K Driver and Passenger Side Air Bags Deployed, heavy fluid leakage from engine, passenger side dash crunched, front right wheel took some impact although I didn't see after the other car was removed.

Glad to hear you are ok. I would insist they total it. Don't know if they'd listen though.

Oh yeah, I've told the other party's insurance co that it's "totaled". Based on my verbal explanation of the damage they said it likely is (though no way to know for sure without an in person inspection).
FL I believe has "diminished value laws", so I'm hoping that helps if this one is close.

It's totaled. Good that you're ok. Lucky you didn't have a passenger, because I doubt they would have walked out completely unharmed.
You should have gone to Burger King. |

Yes, a passenger would have been screwed. I was supposed to drive a coworker since I was on the west coast of FL, but we determined that we have likely hit up a mcdonalds closer to his house earlier in the AM.

The extent of the damage to that door and the intrusion into the cabin is actually kind of disturbing.
What was the other car? Is that a Jag? Looks like it has foot airbags? |

I believe it's a Ford Fusion... The officer told me it was a rental car from Budget. I hope she opted for coverage!!!!

All doors are hollow. Except for the big steel beam which clearly absorbed a huge amount of impact and still looks well intact. The plastic cover may have popped way into the cabin but the other car wasn't in the passenger seat - and that's the point, to absorb and discharge energy by crumbling.

Glad you are ok.
It depends on how much damage the A and B pillars sustained. Looks like the door took the brunt of it. I would say it's borderline and may actually be repaired without being salvaged title. |

The bottom frame on the passenger side looks less bent in the photo than in person. I didn't get a better picture that could show it more clearly.

Damn dude she blew ur gas cap right off. It looks totaled look at the rear door looks like it won't close right. Don't know if it's because the side buckled or if it just took some of the energy transfer.

Because the windshield is not cracked I believe the A pillar is ok. And if that one is, B pillar is also ok.
It seems to me that the door have taken most of the impact and even if it looks scary to watch, the protection was excellent. I don't think is totaled and you don't need to be concerned if it's not. You can can get a very good repair for this kind of incident. Thanks God you are ok! Car crashes are terrible to watch and... have! |
