1st gear bog in manual mode

When I put the car in sport mode, move the shifter to the left and use the manual paddle shifting the car bogs in 1st gear when I shift at around 6,500-7,000 going into 2nd. Feels like the engine power is cut when I shift in that rpm range.

But if I leave the shifter in sport (moved the the left) and let the car shift automatically it will take it all the way to 7,000 and shift into 2nd without a problem.

Any thoughts?

It isn't able to shift fast enough to not bump redline. Shift 500 RPM sooner. Cars with auto transmissions often have this issue as the engine is revving faster than the car can shift if you shift manually too close to redline. In sport auto, my bet is the computer is actually engaging a shift a little earlier then you think and by the time the car is actually able to shift gears the tach hits 7000 RPM.

Shift 500 RPM or so sooner.

Yes, what gthal says makes sense. Because everything happens so fast in 1st gear, the car wants to protect itself and not rev over 7k, which is what will happen if you change at 7k, no matter how fast our transmissions are! If you put the car in Sport+ and then manual mode, it will not shift up for you and just let you bounce off the limiter instead. However, this won't prevent over-rev in 1st because of the inertia of the car, even if throttle is taken away.
Your car is very smart y'see!

This video of the M550d xDrive accelerating illustrates our points of over-revving in 1st in manual mode. The driver is in DSC OFF so the car will not upshift itself and it actually goes past the limiter in 1st gear.

With the powerband of that engine you're probably going to be better off shifting earlier anyways to keep the car where the torque is.
