Trouble with powder coating

Hey all,

I'm posting this here because I figure I will get much more feedback than in the 6 forum. I had my wheels powder coated through the dealership. only had the car 1 month and I'm already regretting my decision to powder coat. rear left was already recoated because it was peeling away. now the right front and rear show areas of defect with out curb rash. perhaps debris and gravel from the freeways caused it. Can anyone with experience on this subject talk about the durability of the powder coating process. did i get myself into a mess by not doing the proper research or did my dealership just use a shit vendor that didn't do it properly.

thanks,
Pej

I've never heard of powder coated wheels with the finish peeling off. I have a set of powder coated wheels on my current DD ('12 Jetta) and they look brand new... Had them coated over 15k miles ago. The BBS wheels I had on my E92 and that are going on my F30 once it arrives also look brand new, and they were powdered awhile ago as well (before I got them).

You sure they didn't just use really crappy paint (or worse; plasti-dip)?

Got any pics you could post?

Powder coat done properly should have no issue at all. The prep. is important and will determine how well the coating holds up. The coating is baked and cured and should be tough as nails. Sounds like the person/s who did the job cut corners.

I have had two sets of rims powder coated with no issues. Sounds like they didn't prep the wheels or really powder coat them.

OEM wheels are powder coated at factory. Powder coating is the typical OEM wheel finish process.

Most refinishers do NOT do powder coating. They use Wurth Industries wet wheel refinish products. This seems to be the typical standard for refinishing wheels.

If the dealers shop really used powder, the question is 1) how did they prep and 2) what powder did they use? Not all Powder finishes are created equal. Some are straight polyester, some are blends with epoxy, etc... Plenty are made in China (junk)! Personally, I prefer Dupont or Akzo Nobel powder products. Each of them have products designed to be used with aluminum wheels in a harsh environment.
