Run Flat puncture

I had my first puncture this week and I thought I'd quickly share the experience.

The warning came on when not far from the office Monday morning and sure enough when I pulled in it was flat and had gone down fast so must have just happened.

That afternoon I drove it home and I was pleasantly surprised how well the car continued to handle, making sure I didn't exceed 80 kmh. Not easy to do based on it still handling pretty well. I took it to my local servo to pump it up but as I was putting air in, it was coming out just as fast. So unfortunately whatever the culprit was hadn't stayed along for the ride.

Next morning I took it to the local Bob Jane shop and they were happy to repair it versus replacing it. $35 and one hour or so later and it was all done. So far, touching lots of wood, it has been good as gold.

Fingers crossed it stays that way.

My Brisgestone Potenzas don't have "do not repair" on them.

What rubber are you running?

I had a rather large bolt drive through my Conti runflats, took it in to the dealership and the guy told me the bad news.

Got a call a few hours later saying that because of where it entered it would be a cheap repair or a replacement. I of course went with the repair and its been great since and cost me a 10th of the replacement cost.

Definitely appreciated the honesty of the dealership, and still love these tyres.

Yep, I also had a puncture in a repairable Bridgestone Potenza (left rear). I had about 20 km to go to complete my trip home and kept the speed to under 80 kph (I found it quite annoying that the cruise control would not work in this situation, as I was struggling to keep the car under 80 kph while not holding up too much traffic behind me).

As soon as I dropped off my passengers at home I immediately sought out a local Bridgestone dealer and had the tyre repaired in 30-40 minutes for the princely sum of $30.............what a bargain!

I had my puncture in early January and have not had any problems with it since.

i had three tyres replaced on my 7 months ownership, all my F31 19" are P Zero and dealer told me the new Potenza are the only one that can be repaired. I had tyre insurance too but ran out of my annual limits on my third (front left), lucky it was cheaper than the rear ($650 dealership stealing price tag).

My front left was punctured in December but was giving up after a month on 1200 km ride including 110kph, was holding up but lucky giving up in Sydney...

my local tyre shops won't repair P Zero...

I have a love hate relationship with runflats. They saved my bacon when I had a screw through a tire, being able to finish my day before sorting it out is a massive plus.

On the other hand, the sidewalls just steal so much feedback, enough that I have to check my inflation pressures every 4 weeks, because I can't tell if a tire is low! Even in the GTI I can feel it when a tire is low.

Yeah that is true, I cant really tell if the tire is running lower than recommended pressure, can someone tell me what the settings menu with the tire monitor etc do, they don't seem to tell me the pressure just that its resetting the run flat monitor.

You should check your tyre pressures every 4 weeks as a minimum. The pressure will drop over time whether you're using the car or not.

As a guide, I use a tyre pressure of 38 psi for my F30 and for the wife's Mini (also on run-flats).

I do (I do around 500km a week, it's kind of an important thing for me). My point was I never had to check until runflats, I could always feel it.

Yeah, I fill my F30's tyres to between 35 and 38psi. Last fill (couple of days ago) was to 36 all around. Seems like a good range.

I was reading this forum last week thinking I have been so lucky not to get a puncture in my 7 years of driving BMW's.

Then yesterday the rear tyre was flat as a pancake. Took it down to the local tyre shop and they said not repairable as it had a piece of sharp metal right through the casing of the tyre.

Anyway fitted a new replacement tyre and noticed that they advertised Nitrogen filling of tyres.

Question - has anyone had this done , do you notice any difference and is it worth getting it done.

You think Game of Thrones is a barely restrained orgy of blood soaked, bestial savagery? Just wait till you see what happens when you ask people on a car forum about Nitrogen filling.

Last time I took part in a conversation about it, graphic designers were arguing with physicists about partial pressures and Boyle's law.

Hahahahaha...your comment just made me laugh very hard...well said!!!

I've seen a few of the forums but never participated. It seems to be a very contentious topic to say the least.
