I think that was only because the E9x was ending its cycle. We're prolly not going to see this vehicle.

I wondered if that would be the equivalent of an M Performance vehicle. The E46 had a special model as well at the end of its life.

The 335is comes in coupe and convertible body styles. So, strictly speaking, we would have to wait for the unveiling of the F32 (and/or F33) next year before seeing a replacement for that car. However, that is not necessarily the best fit answer as there may be more to the story now.

It is likely true that the 335is was born from the idea that profits could be increased by adding a model between the 335i and M3. However, with the new M Performance Vehicle initiative, we will likely see such "tweener" models added to the lineup much earlier in the lifecycle.

That is probably a pretty good bet as an "is" model and an M Performance model are sort of targeting the same customer. And, in addition to a coupe and convertible, we could very well see a sedan and even wagon version (probably no wagon in the US though).
