I opted for Dunlop M3 SuperSport on a 320i xDrive. This is replacing a RWD. Decision was based on that I still wanted to have run flats, so that is a limiting factor. I went down from 18" to 17" wheels, obtained dirt cheap from kijiji.

I found the thread pattern on these tires to be agressive for snow. This is what I wanted. And I think I was correct. In snow I feel they have outstanding traction. Previous tires on RWD E90 were more geared for ice and cold wet or dry performance. But in deep fresh snow I found them useless.

Down sides to the Dunlop are they may not be best suited for ice, as when I come to a stop I find myself sliding to the stop more often and ABS kicks in more often. If they were just a little better on ice it would be a good trade off for snow traction. Bearing in mind that it has been exceptionally cold this year and intersections stay frozen longer. Alternatively I should have got narrower tires than the standard 225s to maybe remove some of the float feeling.

Overall, i'm pleased/impressed with the xDrive and these tires for snow performance.

Spring cannot come soon enough

Back to OP question, always run winters!!! performs better when cold. Performs = safer. Especially when the tread starts to wear. First season you will get away with it with xdrive but second winter on is a definite better with snows. If you have to get new tires or winters in the second year, get snows from the beginning.
I run the 16's as well with a 60 profile (Xi3 = best winter tire I've ever used). The 60 gives me a little insurance against surprises. Years ago with my first BMW I scratched a wheel hidden by snow when I had lower profile tires. It's not that I play 'Curb My Wheel' on a daily basis but with so much snow, you can't see anything.

16/60 really looks weird but winter won't last forever. I just hope the dude with bald all-seasons in the rusted out $500 Pontiac Sunfire doesn't rear end me.

Can't wait for summer and 18/45 on PSS

These are 18" 8.5 Style 269 replicas with ET 35 or 37...can't remember which right now. Tires are 225/45/18. Square set up. To be honest the rears are perfect IMO, but the fronts could use the slightest spacer to push the wheel out just a fraction. Since these are just winters...I'll just leave them be.

I guess it's about time to resurrect this thread

I'm thinking about getting 18" VMR V710 wheel paired with Bridgestone Blizzak WS-80 for my winter setup. Does anybody have VMR wheels for winter? I'm not sure if 18' V710 will fit over oversized m-sport brake

Not 100% sure but i think almost all 18's will fit. 17's are a no go.

So how are the Blizzack WS-70? Its a T speed rated tired... Is the sidewall too soft for a 328d xdrive sportline?

Thinking of going 17".

I wonder if the WS-80's are much better? How about the Xi3? Or Hankook Ipike? Nokians are amazing but loud.

I can't decide.

I had an issue with the first set of 18's that I bought...can't even remember what brand/model they were - MORR replicas. Anyway, they did not fit over the M Sport Calipers. Had to get a different set of 18's, so be sure to check as NOT all 18's fit.

http://laval.bmw.ca/ca/laval/en/deal...heel_sale.html Correct me if I'm wrong but can the 391 16'' design wheel fit on a 328d without M-brakes?

it appeared that both 320i and 328i have same brakes. So the 16" should also fit 328d.

That's correct! Tried 18" VMR wheels and they don't clear the m-sport brake.

I have the WS-70's on my 335 and I love them. They are definitely softer than the stock run flats, as my car is quieter on them than with the all season rft's lol.

Performance in snow, ice, and cold was really good last year, but I don't really push it that hard in the winter months.

Having xdrive won't make a lick of difference in being safer.

Get winters.
