ASD was introduced on 528 in 2014 (for obvious reasons). There is no ASD on 535 or 550.

This.

I hate BMW's artificial solution. Why not make some resonance pipes and stuff like Porsche.

Good effort from the OP for sure, but retrofitting this seems counter intuitive.

The F11 M5 already had ASD.

I understand that. The e90 has can bus. But that doesnt mean the signal necessary for the ASD to fucntion is there. Does it get its signal from just the NBT or CIC?

Can a e90 cic use this ASD?

Can a NBT retrofitted e90 use the ASD?

The E90 CAN Bus is of a different protocol as the F30's. Just because both the E90 and the F30 have "CAN bus" it means nothing if the protocol is different.

Did you code your HU to Hi-Fi or did you leave it as is? The reason I ask, I have base audio without AMP. I coded my ASD for stereo, however don't know if ASD is able to take speaker level input from HU, as my head unit is coded to stereo.

LOL.
Here I am dreading that my 340i will have this artificial audio enhancement, and then there are drivers who want to install it in their cars!

I'm not at all for this approach without an "off" switch.
If this system actually used a microphone to pick up the actual engine and exhaust tones and then amplified those sounds into the audio system, at least we would be hearing what is really there just amplified.
But reading that these sounds are being created by a part, well, that's altogether a different matter.
If it's a module that creates the amplified engine and exhaust system, then that just sucks as it is just truly quite fake.
And not being able to turn it off is an even greater mistake by BMW.

I'm really tired of all the tech bamboozlery done by BMW lately.
I very much dislike the "driver modes" that don't allow me, THE OWNER, to set things as I want them set and then save those settings. Add to that the constantly changing power steering levels in the VSS where the steering effort assist level can change while doing left/right steering at higher speed. Plus the "adaptive" dampers that BMW didn't get quite right as they tried to make their cars ride like an old Cadillac and then transition to a sport cars all with the flick of a button, that doesn't work as well as their marketing department does at making us believe these things.
And now there is "active"..nay FAKE audio of some programmers idea of what a good sounding BMW engine and exhaust woulda or coulda sounded like, being generated via the audio system.

Man, I am really rethinking if I really want the 340i I ordered.
I really want a sport sedan that uses modern mechanical technology to make the car as good as it can be at it's price point rather than using digital technology and electronic mimicry to try and fool the driver into believing that his BMW is that good or great.
This nonsense need to be checked.
Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Garage List
If someone doesnt like the sound, there are plenty of aftermarket systems available, DPs, etc to make it a whole lot louder to the occupants. My old dog car went from quiet as a lamb inside to muscle car sounding with just a set of new mufflers and a crossover pipe (a tuned V8 didn't hurt ). I'm pretty sure given the sound bytes we've heard on the exhausts available, people can find the sound they want.

I had a 328i loaner recently, and I now understand why someone might want ASD.

I know it's a 4-pot, but dang that's awful!

Second video I messed around with F80 M4 settings. Way too aggressive and noticeable, especially on my aftermarket amp & speakers. What also sucks about the M4 setting is that the volume is constant on Eco-Pro,Comfort and Sport. Probably because M4 has different way of adjusting driving modes.

Original post:

Hi guys

I thought I'd post of this thread to share my progress on retrofitting Active Sound Design to my 2013 328i MSport.

To start off with I ordered the module. It has various part numbers, but apparently they are all the same: 65129352264*; 65129326555; 65129343317; 65129353021; 65129362445; 65129362445; 65 12 9 322 712 (03/12 -> ); 65 12 9 302 536 (03/12 -> 07/13).*

I could not get a part number for the connector so I will be making up my own.

Next up I got the pin assignments from ISTA Rheingold:

Attachment 1179890

Here is the inside of the connector:

Attachment 1179891

I then transposed all the pin assignments onto an image to make my life easier:

Attachment 1179892

I then continued to only connect power and the CAN signal.

Attachment 1179893

ISTA detects the new module
ISTA before:

Attachment 1179894

ISTA after:

Attachment 1179895

E-SYS detects the new module:

Attachment 1179896

After this I flashed the ASD module. I used a modified FA where I changed the production code typekey to 3C17 to ensure it is a production code that included ASD.

Here is the FDL edit view afterward:

Attachment 1179897

Next thing I must connect the feed from NBT head unit and output to the AMP. I first need to spend some time to make proper connectors so will update all you guys once I progress further.

Very excited to see this retrofit work!
Hey vitchie,

Thank you so much for sharing this.

Would it be possible for you to take a few pictures of the wired ASD inside your car?

I would love to see where you connected which wires.
Was it nessessary to pull any new cables through the car or do you only wire up the Amp with the ASD?

Thank you so much. I would really appreceate your answer!

Just had my 428 serviced and I told my SA to reprogram the ASD to be "M4" and I'd pay them to do it... they told me impossible?

Its not possible for your BMW dealer!
For a good car coder this is not a problem.

I have HU_ENTRY with base stereo audio in my F30.
Would it be possible to install this without any amplifier?
According to RealOEM it should be installed together with the amp in the trunk. But I have no amp.

Would it be possible to buy an ASD, and just use the connections to the HU, Power/Ground, K-CAN2, HU P? And skip the AMP connectors?
Can I just tap into the connections on the HU_ENTRY harness?

The retrofit should also be possible with only stereo system.
In Rheingold there are descriptions how it works with stereo, hifi and Hifi professional or bang & olufsen.

hello,

I have the ASD module, I use the power & ground of the HIF, and I also use the K-CAN2 of the hifi amp, but impossible to get the ASD module in ISTA popping up.
I used the same pin layout as mentioned above, which is the same as in ISTA Pin Assignement.
Any idea ? I have all the cables, pins & connectors.
