Skiing dilemma

Wife and kids LOVE and are mad for skiing. I find it OK. As a result I'm left thinking "we've skinted ourselves again, no nice summer hols, no ACS springs etc etc for something I'm not hugely enjoying..."

I wondered about doing "ice driving school" while they're skiing but not sure there are convenient options, and the budget would already have been well and truly blown.

Any pearls of wisdom?

I feel your pain.!!

Get a cheap rental car take it out to a field packed with snow.. tow your wife and kids with a ski rope while you drive the crap out of it.

Thanks chaps. While we sort the lease arrangements, I meanwhile emailed BMW driving experience to see how much their ice/snow driving in Austria costs - we'll see.

Isn't putting your wife and kids first what you signed up for? You sound quite resentful.

That's a fair question / comment. I love seeing the enjoyment they get out of skiing. To be honest I could probably still find £500 or so even with ski hols for ACS springs for example but I'd feel a bit guilty spending it anyway.

I guess I just don't really like skiing. Love the mountains when sunny and would happily spend all day outside a bar watching the skiers go past!

We went to Bulgaria for a "hot" holiday a couple of years ago and the kids loved that too - and I feel like it would be great to go on one "mega" hot holiday once before they fly the nest...

I'm babbling on - first world problems - maybe a bit of a winter mix and match would be ideal....

Not sure how old your kids are - when ours were teens they went skiing with school so we had summer holidays and they got best of both worlds. Wouldnt work for your wife but if she has girlfriends who ski maybe you could offer her a weekend without the kids whilst you looked after them...

But echo the comments about flying the nest - mine are now 24 and 23 and holidays with me are a thing of the past. I can indulge in whatever car I want now though. I would happily swap that for the time with the kids!

When you talk of them flying the nest, are they old enough that you're not tied to school holidays?

If possible, my advice would be to ditch Austria in prime season, lovely though it is, and go high and go late. If you go for higher altitude - Tignes/Val d'Isere was always popular with our group - you can go later in the season and still get good snow when the weather starts to improve.

As my knee started to go downhill I found myself cutting my days shorter. With good weather I could head for a bar on the slopes, grab a glass of something refreshing and something tasty to eat, and sit in the sunshine in t-shirt and shorts while the others finished tiring themselves out. As time went on I seemed to get a bigger group for that than the hardcore racers did
