6MT + Sport Mode + Hill = Impossible

So, maybe there's just something unique about my clutch wear, but for anyone else with a 6MT:

Do you find that on a steep incline, in Sport mode, that it is almost IMPOSSIBLE to modulate the throttle and not only accomplish a smooth takeoff, but do so without burning up your clutch?! Sheeeesh...the throttle is so over-sensitive in Sport mode that there's little pedal travel to gently slip into full traction.

It may also be that I drive in Comfort so often, that I'm not used to the pedal travel, but I don't think that's the primary issue.

I have a side street near me that has a rediculous incline with an intersection near the top. Not only do I have no issues with my 6MT in sport mode, but it reminds me just how much of a pleasure the MT clutch/box are in my 2017 340.

I'll admit that I can't recall if I have issues from a dead stop (where "Hill Hold" would be enacted) OR when I'm slowing down enough to engage first gear, but not a complete stop (waiting on the exit gate from my street to open). My "experience" with this is always at this location...I'll try and take notice next time under what scenarios this presents itself.

No issue for me either in sport, though to be honest, I can't recall being on super steep incline in sport+, but just for kicks, I try avoiding auto-hold as much as possible just not quite coming to a full stop or playing with the clutch (who cares about clutch wear right).

C'mon BMW, If I felt I needed auto-hold, I'd opted for AT.

No issues for me even on SUPER STEEP incline, you should see this hill lol

I've messed it up a few times (drive it frequently) but more due to user error than anything. I stay in sport mode 100% of the time so I have consistent throttle response.

I wonder if you have no issue because you're in Sport all the time, so you're use to the throttle modulation? My experience is that I'm used to one, but then switching to the other I'm just all over the place. I don't know...maybe it's user error! Ha! But I've only driven manuals since I've owned a car (32 years now).

Maybe that's it. I always get (pleasantly) surprised by how much more responsive throttle in sport mode is. In my opinion, that's what it should be like all the time .

I barely ever drive in comfort, I'd say 75% of the time I'm in sport, but that might be your issue, the difference is significant between comfort and sport.

Try the DSC off button, should have normal throttle map instead of sensitive throttle map of the sport & sport+ with DSC button no pushed.

I should add that I switch back and forth a decent amount between comfort and sport. I have dynamic suspension and the softer comfort mode really helps with some of the bad roads near me.

No issues with the different throttle sensitivity. I do it by feel of the engine, not by how much my foot has moved.

Compared to all my other cars, the throttle is the least sensitive by far (including sport mode). I find it almost un-drivable in comfort mode from a stop, the throttle is so laggy. It's all about what you're used to. Drive in sport mode for a month, and you probably won't notice it.

The more powerful a car is it tends to be a lot easier to modulate a non twitchy throttle. I use a gentler tip in on the COBRA due to its weight 2200lbs & power.

Least bit over on throttle push the 315's are history. When I ran the 1/4 mile with the 335is I used a second gear start with the throttle dialed back a little by the JB4.

When I had my 328 I always drove in Sport mode. There's a very steep hill about 1/4 mile from my home with a light at the top. Never felt it was an issue. Don't be afraid to give it more gas.

the F30's hill assist is not intrusive and helps a lot when starting from a dead stop on an incline

how you can tell if hill assist is working or not?
try moving a little bit to disengage hill assist and then modulate throttle and clutch
it actually makes you work for it like the olden days

Must be a slow learner.

If the move off is fine in Comfort mode, it appears to me it is simply the sensitivity of the Sport mode throttle mapping, in that particular situation.

The OPs problem was that the throttle was too sensitive. Billfitz suggestion is correct in that case.

Yes, that was really my point. I think your mind-eye-body coordination gets used to a pattern (in this case, throttle sensitivity), and then when/if you change a variable in a situation which exacerbates the issue (in this case, a steep incline), it throws off the cadence.

Either that, or there is something quirky about my particular clutch take-up.

All that being said...I tried to replicate the situation this morning, and could not. I had no issue with Sport mode in that area. I think because I was concentrating on it (that I was in Sport mode).

Incorrect. Second gear is NOT a choice for a steep incline, unless you want to exacerbate the issue (and glaze your clutch plate).
