DIY: Replacing Fog light bulbs (5 minutes)

I've seen a few threads discussing bulb types and what colour bulbs to use to get rid of the 'yellow' looking fogs, but no DIY.

As I had to do mine, I thought I would take some pics, to show how it's done on an M Sport. (I first looked in the manual, but it referred to a non M Sport and looked different)

So below please see the sequence of pics.

Before you start: Get your new bulbs ready (H8 35w), I used MTEC MT-471 (colour 4,750K). Don't forget - do not touch the glass part of the bulbs, if you do, use an alcohol wipe to remove any oil prints left from your fingers.

Also you need an 8mm Socket and ratchet wrench.

Lastly, turn the steering wheel as far as it goes one way. It doesn't matter which direction as once turned you can access both sides.

Step 1: Locate the 3 - 8mm headed screws (circled). Undo the outer 2 and remove the screws.

Step 2: Gently prise back the arch liner, revealing the rear of the fog light.

Step 3: Unplug the black plug, by squeezing the two tabs on the short sides.

Step 4: Twist the old bulb about 60 degrees towards the outside of the car, and ease bulb out, remembering not to touch the bulb part.

Step 5: Fit new bulb in the exact reverse order. Make sure the plug clicks into place.

Step 6: Enjoy the warm colour beam.

Step 7: Put the arch liner back in place, and fit the screws.

the 4750k looks great. I went to 8k and they have a blue hue which I do not like. Looks like I'll be picking up some M-tecs. Thx

good questions.

One more: how may watts is the OEM fog light?

OP... thanks for putting together this DIY instruction. How do you compare the OEM fog lights with the new ones in terms of brightness?

No worries, yes standard were also 35watts. These M-Tecs do seem brighter, but the light colour is more noticeable, not yellow any more, more an extension of the headlights white light.

Random question...

With all vehicles these days having DRL, is it still an offence to drive with front fogs on when conditions are fine?

Nisfan does the liner in the arch also give access to the headlights?

Thanks

Hi Guys just finished washing the car....Was looking at the wheel arch liner and the 3 hexagon head bolts that Nisfan indicates to remove but It all looks like one big panel to me with additional bolts as well..

I cant see where the liner splits in to a separate piece to expose the fog light housing only..

Can you simply prise the liner back sufficiently for access without actually removing any panels?

If you want to make it easier remove the six bolts so you can have more space.
I removed my tire as well because I did the hids for the low beam and the fog lights and I needed more room to see exactly what I was doing.

Found your thread & photos - cheers NISFAN.

BMW must know these look better than the yellow fogs so why don't they fit them as standard? An easy 'tick in the box' for the facelift, I suppose.

Does anyone prefer the yellow fogs or know of a downside to this mod?

No accounting for taste but I like yellow fogs. But I'd drop them in a minute for brighter hid fogs.

Just seen this thread - surely yellow fog lights are better, that's why the street lights (not the newer LED ones) are yellow, to make the light softer/less blinding in a sea of fog?

You learn something new every day!!!

To be fair though, i much prefer a matching "xenon look" fog light!

Great guide, I will be using for sure!
