I have the setup you described in #1. Ride quality is not bad. It is definitely not as cushy as non-RFTs, but it wasn't bad enough for me to fork over dough to change up the rims/tires.

18" wheels will fit, I use them for my winter tires, you just need minimum ET 34 to clear the M sport brakes.
