I've had limp mode symptoms since last fall.
VERY high fan speed, way low oil temp gauge, weak power.
I posted a video on this forum back then.

Took it to the dealer a couple months ago, but since there was no code they did nothing.
When the weather turned really cold, below 32F consistently, my oil temp gauge doesn't register any temp for about 10 minutes. Then it goes up but won't rise above the first notch above the base. I can drive for over an hour and the oil temp won't go up.
When it got warmer just a few weeks ago, above 50-60F, the oil temp gauge goes up to where it normally goes. When the temps drop below 32F again the oil temp gauge stays way low again.

Dealer says it's "normal" cause it's cold outside.
These "Techs" are not technical at all and if their Kompooter doesn't tell them what's wrong they don't know what to do.

Exclamation Limp mode = potential death

Hey everyone, recently picked up my 2013 335i MSport. I have experienced the limp mode twice. Very concerned, this is a huge safety issue. I'm now hesitant to cut across traffic. I could have bought 3 more reliable cars for the money spent on this car. Three questions;
1. Just wondering how many people on here have had the cooling fan replaced more than once?
2. Why is this not yet a safety recall? One of us will end up getting killed because of this.
3. What are BMW engineers doing to try and resolve this persistent issue? Anyone have any idea? It needs to be brought to the attention of some important people in the company.

My apologies. It's still a different issue than what is discussed in this thread.

More specifically this recall is for the N54 engine. Not N55. No relationship to this thread or issue.

We'll I am back after a long absence. Limp mode at the first hint of warm weather. Prescribe fix look ominously like all the other fixes but there is a diference this time:

Error:
Unfavourable DME application : Data entry error in the fan's "overboost function"

the electric fan is not designed for the "overboost function" to operate continually

Measures
New software ISTRAP 2.51.0 integration level F020-13-11-501 or most recent
Replace fan shroud with the 850-W fan
More robust electric fan available
Part number remains the same 17 42 7 640 513 index version 04 or more recent

The details seem different in that the resolution is an updated fan, the diagnosis is closer to the issues
. So on the surface it looks like the know about the problem and have some root cause analysis. I'm not sold as they always start at the fan. Has anyone had this new 850-W fan put in and still gone limp?

I just had it installed on Tuesday. Picked my car up yesterday and was informed today that my PPK was in, so I only drove it for a couple of hours (PPK was supposed to be delayed until mid month). Interestingly, the AC seemed to be quieter after the fan replacement. I will have a better idea after the PPK instal.

I have MPPK as well. I hope that this finally resolves the issue, I love the care otherwise. The new problem text at least is an indication that BMW knows what the issue is. (I think they were in denial for quite some time) I have been through the ringer with this problem. I was one of a batch of originals back in 2012 to have this problem, too many lost days and fixes, car replacement, Limp again 2 months into the new car. In Canada the problem is masked due to cold winter.

The new fan makes sense if it is able to sustain overboost without sending the wrong signal to the DME, but we have been down the replace fan and shroud path many times. Interestinly the M-Sport's main difference to the standard N55 is the AUX fan, so........we'll see.

Anyone else have the 850-W fan Fix?

I always believed it was a software issue as a result of the additional fan. I hope this new fan is the final solution.

What does MPS mean in your user tag? MPPK?

M Performance Suspension (MPS). It will soon include MPPK too.

Just a question pertaining to buy backs/trade assist. Not sure if it'll ever happen but better I ask now than scrambling to find an answer later on. If BMW eventually buys back a car with cosmetic mods, i.e. m-perf lip, rear spoiler, color matched side markers, m-perf grills, vinyl wrapped roof, suspension etc. how will this work? Would the owner just be at a loss on those parts/mods that aren't removable or a pain in the ASS to remove or will BMW factor them in?

I imagine you would be SOL. Why would that stuff be of any value to them. They will buy back the car they sold you probably.

I would imagine a scenario where a person purchased the MPPK and/or MPS from the dealer and would receive those items on a replacement car (port installed, of course).

I was thinking this too but what happens if the MP parts were bought AFTER the car and not WITH it? I'd imagine them asking for proof of purchase. The other non BMW parts I can understand to be void.

I just reread my sentence and I wasn't as clear as I should have been.

I bought my MPS and MPPK from the dealer that I purchased my car from. I imagine that BMW would include those same options on a new car as part of a buyback but they have the MPS and MPPK installed at the port (for the new car).
