My immediate family have run VAG models for over 25 years, mostly VW and to be fair it is a mixed bag just like BMW. Just a few months ago my sister parted with a VW she had planned to keep, but it was so much trouble it had to go. New DSG box, gearbox control unit, numerous software updates, turbos, suspension knocking and more. Never sorted properly, even in warranty. Nothing particularly broke, just never worked correctly.

At the same time an identical engine and drivetrain in another VW, again driven by my sister works perfectly. One of my own VW Passats had 90 days in the garage over 2-years. 5 days in the first week from new.

If we want best builds and high reliability I do think we need to look to the Japanese, but even they are not so perfect.

According to Which magazine, their latest car survey has shown the F31 to be the most reliable estate car on the market! Beating the Skoda and the 5 series estate.

The 3GT topped the large car class and the F30 saloon was not far behind. So all things considered BMW seem to be doing something right.

One of the most critical car surveys for reliability is by Fleet News. Transport managers are a very critical bunch, more likely to base their results of facts than opinion. BMW to pretty well, year on year.

The Which survey has just been released so includes all F30/31 since launch, and it's doing very well.

Can't find the latest results on Fleet News, (2013) but remembered it was good.... found a version of it presented on HJ's site.

A bit over a thousand, so not at all cheap! This was a custom fit though, rather than the 3M preset cuts. It gives a better fit. Not worth it for everyone, but we do a lot of miles and plan to keep the car for a few years, so worthwhile to is in that context.

You could get the bumper and front area of bonnet and wings done for about £600, and this is the area which gets the brunt of the stone chip damage.

Thanks for the link. Fabulous job.
Worth it for all the miles you do.
