Generation X here. Fairly early Gen X....

4th BMW. One from each 3 series generation starting with E36 M3. F30 335i MSport now. Pretty happy thus far.

My friends keep telling me I need to move up to a 5 series but every time I drive one (or other larger sedans) I just can't do it. Knowing that the F30 is about the same size as a E39 5 Series I guess I am now driving one.

Only one F30. The rest are/were E24s, E28s, E32s and E34s. Oh, and an E83. I hated that thing.

61 here, and just ordered my fourth BMW.

First one was an E36 328i Boston Green/ Sand leather, Next was E46 335i Sparkling Mineral Graphite/ light gray, and now am trading 2011 Blue Water/Oyster-Black 335i for my ordered 335i Black Sapphire/Red Coral Sport Line. (Tried to get them to special order an "always on" left turn signal to no avail )

Modest houses in California can go over $500K. In my area similar houses sell for $250K. So, it makes a BIG difference in what car one can afford based on the market one lives in.
$140K in one part of the US may only give you 2/3 the buying power of big items in other parts of the country.

Yet, a 3 costs the same all across the US.
"Affordability" varies.
The price of a house where you live is irrelevant. What's relevant is what your income is, how much equity you have in your home and what your net worth is and how conservative you are with money.
