New BMW Dealer Allocation

At the end of August I purchased a RWD 2015 328i. During September my SA tried to get a production allocation for my car but was unable. My SA said that since my order is RWD he could not get a slot. If it were an AWD he said it would be no problem. Has anyone ever had this kind of problem where they could not get an allocation because their order was for a RWD car?

I understand that dealers get so many allocations for each model of BMW, but beyond that is there allocations for RWD as well? Or is my SA just talking nonsense. Or is BMW Canada really trying to push everyone towards AWD and discouraging RWD purchases?

typically, the rwd willl have to wait awhile ... I believe the reason being such a low volume production model, the factory may want to gather up enough orders to do this all at once at a particular time slot. From last year, a blogger here was in the same position as you and was told there will b a 3-4 months wait, even that is not absolute time frame.

Correct - RWD prod does not occur every month, they need to get enough orders first. I would estimate Dec prod for a car like that for end of Jan delivery or Feb if it's a South Africa build.

So it looks like I will have to wait months and months if I want a RWD. I wish I knew that up front as I would probably not have bothered. When I purchased the car I was told the only delay would be because CP Rail was all backed up with grain deliveries and the car would be stuck in Halifax for several weeks.

Since this car does not even exist I'm seriously getting something else from the dealer's lot.

I went through the same challenges, OP. If you are leasing, you will find that the difference between selling price and residual value favours the Xdrive as well resulting in lower monthly payments on a more "expensive" car.

That said, if you have the time, wait to get the RWD, it is a driving experience like no other.

Best of luck OP and I hope your struggles don't lead to changing brands. I made that mistake, leasing a Lexus in 2010 when I was told there were no RWD 328s in Canada when I returned my 2007 328i. But then again, at that time I was dealing with a real knob of a SA in 2010. There are some good ones out there, just find someone you are comfortable dealing with.*

I had the same problem with my dealer not having a RWD allocation, but my SA was able to get an additional allocation from BMWNA for me.

RWD woes :(

Hey F30_Fahrer, I actually have the same problem with the 428i RWD i've ordered a little over a week ago... I called my SA on Thursday and he told me there's a "situation" that he cannot get allocation since my car is RWD, it's a "special" car he said lol . He told me it'd go into production beginning of October when I signed the papers which I was extremely excited about... He's going to email me on Monday to let me know the full details but he's speculating earliest would be mid December production and mid Jan delivery which SUCKS because I was looking forward to an early Dec delivery.

Do you guys think I can haggle with the dealer on the price since he gave me the wrong info?

COKen, do you know what your SA did to get an early allocation?

I talked to my SA some more about this and he was telling me that people coming in to his dealer are just not interested in RWD. Everyone wants an AWD and they have a hard time selling any RWD car. He even said people are 'scared' of RWD and opt for the AWD for safety reasons. That would help explain why they have so few allocations for RWD.

For me I have no problem with RWD and with a good set of winter tires my car will be just as good as an AWD with their all seasons that they come with.

The dealer that I am talking with is also selling their pre-owned RWD 328i and 335i cars at pretty big discounts. I am seriously thinking about to getting one instead.

I don't. They were trying to get an allocation from another dealer. Once they told me they had the allocation I asked my SA what they had to trade for it. He told me "nothing" and said the were able to get another allocation from BMWNA. This dealer sells lots of cars and has won many awards. Not sure if that had anything to do with their ability to get the additional allocation or not.

dealer in Canada will not order a rwd car for inventory as it will sit for a long time. If the dealer does order one, it will be pretty loaded so it will appeal to a wider crowd. Certainly, the drawback would be very pricey indeed.

I am so happy I got my RWD 328i in early 2012 as that was the bulk of the initial 3er run in Germany. At the time people wanting xdrive were the ones who had to wait.

Just drove my cousin's brand new 2014 328d xdrive and the driving dynamic is quite different... I prefer the RWD. Plus AWD is mostly marketing as a good set of winter tires is more often than not enough IMHO.

Good Luck!

Thought I'd share some input on my experience.

I placed an order for a 2015 335 RWD in June. It was slated for August production, however it goes pushed back a month to September due to the low volumes of RWD orders. So yes, they group batch and produce them when it makes sense to do so...as I expected. I was told 90-95% of the sales they do here are AWD models so there is only a handful that prefer RWD like myself.

What I don't understand is.....my dealership and sales associate did everything possible to help me. I was a serious buyer and he amended one of the AWD models slated for production for my RWD request. Shortly after i was able to get the production number and all information I ever asked for, vin, tracking etc. Sales and sale right?

You could always pick up this 2014 435i at Parkview:

I bet there's a pretty great deal to be had on it, since they are well into the 2015 model year now.

That's interesting... I was told that they could not amend an AWD for a RWD since I'm asking for manual as well. I find all these restrictions and limitations ridiculous. I don't know if its on BMW Canada's call or BMW Germany's call; my dealer is saying they're trying everything they can but it's been a week and a half since I've put an order in!

And yeah, I'm not a fan of dealing with sales people. Never once did he mention to me that there would be an issue with allocation when we were making the deal, he said production would start beginning of October and I took his word for it (apparently October is full). I had no idea allocation would cause an issue... Anyways, they're trying to get me an earlier allocation, lets see how long it'll take.

^ at least there is factory credit allowance of $1500 (cash purchase) to begin with + whatever you can get off from the dealer, ideally 8%.

Is that factory credit allowance for full cash purchase only? I'm financing myself but I'm planning to put a little less than half of the purchase price as a down payment.

just want to clarify ... no factory credit on the 15 4GC and coupe. Actually, the interest rate for finance & lease @ 4.9% is very high.

I am referring to 14 4series

428xdrive & 435xdrive -
$1500 factory credit on cash purchase
$1000 factory credit on finance & lease

If you finance, also get 0.9% up to 60 months

It is true that dealer allocation on RWD's are minimal in Canada.
You would probably have a better time finding one on the West coast of the country..
On CPO's you would have a much easier time. Quite a few 2012's out there.
We currently have a 428i RWD in a 6 Speed sitting in the showroom. It's black sapphire on Black.
I'm also currently driving a fully jazzed up 435i RWD in Black Sapphire on Coral Red in a 6 Speed manual. It's my dealer demo. Car currently has about 7k on it.
I'll do a bit of research for you if you'd like on a 3 RWD across the country and let you know what i find. It'll be my pleasure helping out a fellow bimmerposter
Just private message me the details on what you're looking for exactly.
And if you or anyone is looking for a 4 RWD well like i mentioned we have the 428 and 435 RWD in stock.
Cheers!

This is exactly what I did a few days ago. I purchased from my local BMW dealer a CPO 2012 RWD 335i Sportline with 30k on it. The 335i is in amazing condition and I got a great price on it because it was a RWD. My CA was putting ever increasing discounts on it over the summer because people in my area are just not interested in RWS. I'm going to be picking it up tonight.

I'm going to be ording the MPE and the MPPK and have my dealer install them in the near future.

Aamzing!
You made the right move.
And absolutely dealers are being especially agressive on RWD's since there's no real demand for them and winter is right around the corner!
