Throatier sound

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I just put my 2013 328xi in for its first service. They gave me a 2014 328xi. When I put the loaner in sport there is a very distinctive growl that my car doesn't have. I asked the service tech and he said its the exhaust flap, but my car never sounds like that, it doesn't matter if its cold or warm. What I am wondering is if anyone else's changes the exhaust or motor sound the instant you put sport mode on. Now I have the classic line, and the loaner was a luxury line, not sure if that makes a difference.

I have a 13' 328i x-drive also but M-Sport. TBH I never noticed if the exhaust notes changes in sport or sport +. The exhaust seems muted all of the time except during cold start which is a little raucous. I'll keep a listen out for the change in sport and report back.

I can feel a sound difference between modes. There is a noticeable burble on gear changes in Sport when accelerating hard, and it's just louder in general. Not to say it's LOUD, just louder. But this is probably not due to any change in the exhaust system. It's just that Sport revs higher and quicker, which obviously pushes more exhaust gas through the pipes, making them noisier.

It's the audio enhancement.

Any proof to that claim? No word of such a technique ever being used on the F30.

When you look under the car is there a servo-actuated flap on one of the exhaust pipes? I have a 335 so don't know what the 328 looks like underneath. I did the M-Performance exhaust (which also came with a actuated flap that I defeated). Sounds great with the flap locked open!

Cool! So then it *should* be possible to do that "golf tee" mod on the 328 and keep both pipes open. On my old 2009 E90 I used a ball bearing in the vacuum hose and on the current F30 I pulled the spring clip and used baling wire to hold the flapper open (so as to not throw codes for disconnecting the actuator).

I noticed the same thing it's not exhaust but induction. It must be audio enhancement.

Is that why my 335i right side (when viewing from rear) exhaust pipe is full of black soot yet the left is light grey. I drive in comfort 99% of the time. If yes then what is the purpose of flap. My thoughts is to remove it sounds dumb. Would not having the flap closed reduce hp?

What exactly is the flap for?

On my 335i, the flap blocks one exhaust pipe (driver side) so all the exhaust is pushed out the other. The actuator opens when you stomp on the gas (and probably during other times). Most driving the 335's have a sooty passenger side pipe and clean drivers side. Golf tee mod (as it's called) keeps the drivers side pipe open all the time. Sounds better (on acceleration and the burble when shifting/decelerating) and keeps both pipes looking the same.

Thanks for the heads up as I will be inquiring about this golf tee mod you speak of because I just don't understand why BMW implemented this feature in the first place

Adio enhancement, WTF! Seriously? I would expect this from maybe Kia, but BMW, the ultimate driving machine. Maybe I bought the wrong car, should I have purchased the S4.

I came from n54 335 to n20 328 and I was impressed with the audio enhancement. Although you don't want to tell anybody that your car has it haha.
