Non Run Flat Tires: Suggestions, Results and Pictures

My F30 335i is set to arrive in the next few weeks and from nearly everything I have read the run-flats are MUCH improved over previous generations but are still run flat and low rolling resistance which are very disappointing from a handling/grip perspective compared to non-run-flat tires.

There are multiple threads on this and other forums complaining, praising, questioning run flats and changing them.

I was hoping we could set up a central thread for those of us who want to switch to non run flat tires on our F30s.

1. Any suggestions or reports on which non run flats you've switched to?
2. Anybody able to have the dealer switch out the run flats on delivery for free?
3. Anybody try/buy a Spare Tire Repair kit? Any advice on which one works with Tire Pressure Monitor Systems?
4. Any reason to be concerned that the F30 suspension is set up for run flat and switching to non-run flat will mess up the ride?
5. Does a leased vehicle have to be returned with run flats? What have you done or plan to do about that?
6. Any feedback on how the run flats actually are for grip/handling? I understand they're pretty good for comfort etc., but what about grip/handling?
7. Any feedback/calculations on going with 235 or wider tires on the 18" rims?

I swapped out the run-flats on my e90 for michelin pss. The pss's where incredible, both grip and ride quality. On the new f30 335, i don't mind the pirelli p7 cinturato a/s. more than anything i would just like a staggered setup, but i bought a sportline off the lot, so no sport suspension or staggered setup.

In Canada, we don't have to worry about tpms, we use flat tire monitor, so no internal components to worry about.

Thanks for the reply.

1. Can you please elaborate on the flat tire monitor vs. tpms? So no tpms/valve that I've seen in US pics?

2. So your sport line came with A/s? are you sure? Because I think the Pirelli is a summer or an all season, does yours have all season written on it (as the all seasons do).

3. When you swapped out on your e90, did you carry a spare or a repair kit?

1. Flat tire monitor just monitors the rolling diameter of the tire via ABS sensors, i believe. It lights up when pressure changes by a few psi ( i don't recall the exact number). There are no internal sensors to worry about gumming up with mobility kits.

2. The Pirelli's on my f30 are all season P7 Cinturato.

3. I just threw one of those slime Flat tire repair kits in my trunk. Though i couldn't tell you if it would actually do any good, there are mixed reviews in the effectiveness.

Very good info. So a plan of swapping to Michelin Pilot Sports at delivery and throwing a Slime repair kit in the trunk may work well.

I just wish we could get some more feedback on here from those that have gone non run flat on their F30 already.

An air compressor is the best addition - if you get a slow leak you have the option of keeping the tire inflated properly until it can be repaired w/o any hassle of cleaning slime off the inside of the tire.

My 335i has arrived and I have put 700km on it. I LOVE this car!

The tires at 225 on 18" look good from all angles. But for some reason the braking performance has scared the crap out of me twice. I don't know if it's low rolling resistance or run-flat or the 225 but the grip and braking do not match the power of this car.

Can I put 235 wide non-run flat performance tires on the stock 18" sport line rims? And if so, would they be 235/40/R18? Is that the right size to maintain everything as normal.
