I have a routine service appointment scheduled for next week (oil change, inspection, plus they are checking on camera malfunction). Do the BMW techs update or do I need to ask for something specific to get this update?

The software update will be listed under "technical campaigns" on the key data, and the SA will add that to the work order(it is money for them).

I just dropped my car to have the ASS reprogramed to stay off/on. I wonder if the update will include the new parameters to fix the steering. SA said they ahd to download new software and upload it. They gave me a 128 courtesy vehicle and the steering between that and my 335i is night and day, I like the heavier steering feel.

Haha yeah I try to avoid getting the 1 series or older 3 series as loaners just for this reason. No update on the F30 will ever make it as good as the older hydraulic setups .

Only time will heal, and the memories of the perfect steering feel will fade to legend, legend will fade to myth until it is altogether forgotten..

2014 320i premium pkg only, took it in for its first service at 8k miles 3 days ago. Software for sure was updated, and the minute I drove the car off I noticed the heavier steering right away, but I waited a couple of days to see if it was just me tho the car was only at the Dealer for 2 hours so it's not like I would forget that quickly how the steering was I was sure something had changed. I even checked the tire pressure and it's still the same so I know the difference in stiffness is from the software update, the steering prior to service was too flimsy and only tight on sports mode. I also noticed a couple of new options on my idrive that weren't there before like switching driving lights off and pictures on the Efficiency Dynamics are a little sharper as well, also there's a new menu on settings to change from miles to kilometers etc.
I know some of you already had those options but I didn't until the update.

i find it funny that the dealers refuse to acknowledge the fact that the update stiffens the steering, seems quite unfair for those that don't have an issue that warrants an update to be missing out

the car truly feels completely different, comfort mode is no longer super light

My guess is the software update can be done standalone under warranty, but it seems BMW is pushing out a steady stream of SIBs(mine has two new SIBs since 2/2014), so it can get old to keep bringing car in for each SIB.

Does anyone know if customers need to pay for these software updates after warranty expiration?

When i went to the dealer I pressed them for the software update, they said they would try to find a reason to do it( and they did b.c of a bulletin for upgrading my cooling fan) BUT, if they didn't find a reason I would have had to pay for it.

It's good to know. I do wonder if it is BMWNA policy or dealer dependent, I will ask my SA next time about this.

Do note that "in range" mileage allows the CBS service to be done early, e.g. CBS oil change with 2000 miles to go is listed as "in range", so one may choose to get service early.

Have a 2012 328 sportline got the software update back in January and it has definitely been an improvement on the steering. Comfort mode has a little more heft than before. Just got my summer tires mounted and the car handles much better now especially in sport mode. Out of curiosity are guys running summer times or all season at the moment?

looking forward to the A.S.S. being smoothed out and the last memory added.

the steering is the bonus

when they booked me, they also added the 328i recall. Assuming this is for the brake recall from Sept '13?

still baffles me that a May '13 production car that sits on a lot and sold to me Jan 2014 was never updated nor recall fixed before delivery.

Just got my car back yesterday after having the ASS program to stay on. I can confirm no changes in steering wheel. I guess I will have to wait till my next maintenance in 7k to ask for an update.

I've known that BMW will do it if you're close to zero. However, hasn't the service interval changed from 15000 to 10000 miles? If so, does this mean that I can bring my car in when it reads 5000 miles to go?

So, I make an appointment for the ASS reprogramming. What else do I need to tell my SA in order to ensure I get the steering update? Do I need to tell him to look up the latest applicable "technical campaigns" for my car?

I'm coming from an E46 330xi, and while I know I'll never be able to replicate the hydraulic steering feel, an improvement would be nice...

they'll look that up regardless, hopefully you have a bulletin to get something fixed. just let the SA know that you really want a software update and to try to find a reason to have them do the update

Got it. I'll be making an appointment for the next available opening in the service department where I can get a loaner car. Hopefully I'll be posting here sometime next week with good news! I'll gather as much intel as I can from my guy to pass along.

Just picked up a new 328d MSport in Munich (April 2014 build) and the steering is quite different than my last F30 (2013 AH3 MSport, June2013 build). Even in EcoPro it feels much stiffer. For reference, both systems were VSS. Very happy!

Very strange. I'm not sure how they are rolling out these updates, but it's very frustrating that some are getting them and some are not. I'm scratching my head.
