Best way to get 400M style 18" winter wheels?
My car has the MS+ pack and consequently 19" wheels. I would like a set of 18" wheels for my winter set, which I assume will fit over the MS+ brakes?
The set that appeal most are the standard M Sport 18" ones, which I believe are 400M style. I am not fixed on these, but would almost certainly want OEM. I could look for a set on ebay, which probably have summer tyres on to begin with, and then fit a new set of winter tyres and try to sell the summer tyres. Are there sensible alternatives, like somewhere that would sell the package at a reasonable price? Suggestions welcome. Not urgent of course... Cheers JD6 |

I did the deal on a set (with winter Sotto Zeros) when I bought the car. I'd have a chat with your dealer as they do get people moving to the 20's so sometimes have a set available (ours did just after I got mine).

Unfortunately I bought a new car from stock from a dealer a few hundred miles away, so too late to make it part of that deal.
I will speak to my local dealer though to see if they have any available. They have a feeble sales department, but the service and parts are ok. I guess the F30 is a little new to have too many used winter sets floating around. Cheers |

The 400m wheels do look good (better and easier to clean/maintain than the 403s many of us have, but let's not get in to that debate!)
Anyway, one thing to consider with winters is that the 400 wheels are staggered (wider at the back, needng 255 40 18 tyres to fit properly). It is recommended you go for a square set up on winters which would mean 225 45 18 tyres all round. (There are some on here that have put the narrower tyre on the wider rim but not sure if there is an issue with that. And, if my search last autumn is anything to go by, bmw approved run flats in 255 40 18 are very scarce) I guess you could fit 2 pairs of front wheels in style 400 but these will not be availble in a set from any bmw dealer and are not strictly oem. Which is a shame as that would have been my choice. |

That is really helpful, thanks. I hadn't thought about the staggered issue, or the scarcity of the 255 40 18.
AndyH - do you find that the rear wheel is less protected by the tyre against kerbing than the front with that arrangement? This is a real long shot, but I have a set of F10 winter wheels (328 style) with 245 45 18 tyres from my last car. Not the sportiest wheel, but I assume that they wouldn't fit on the F30? When the tyres are on, you really can't tell the difference between the fronts and rears. I had them on all winter and no issues at all. |

I'd stick with your plan (biased because that's exactly what I did). I bought a set of 400m's of a dealer via ebay with tyres (which they were kind enough to split from the tyres before sending) Sold the tyres via ebay Camskill then supplied a staggered a set of Pirelli Sottozero run flat winters for the 400m's. Bugger is I never needed to use them. |

BMW do offers on winter wheels. I missed out on the last one but am hoping to sort again later in the year...

Anyone have any recommendations for winter tire sizing for M Sport staggered 18" 400m wheels? I don't think there are any matching front and rear winter tires in the original size but I was wondering about going a bit taller on the tires.

I don't know how specific you are on the wheels you want. I got a set of 18 inch f30 luxury wheels on the bay of e for £160. They need a refurb (when I will change the colour) but for an outlay of £400 I will have a decent set of BMW alloys to fit my Michelin Sport Alpin's to. F34's have a slightly higher profile tyre anyway and I will have the 'square' set up on mine of 225/50 18. I don't know if you can get away with these on an F30 but I would have thought so.
Worth keeping an eye out... |

Is there any reason why I can't just buy winter tyres and get them fitted to my 403s with TPMS sensors already fitted?
I've had a look and can't be bothered shelling out £2k+ for winter wheels set. |

You can do if you wish, the only issue is your more likely to kerb them. Also not sure if constantly removing the runflats would cause a problem.

Set of 19" tyres will be about £700, then £120 to change the tyres twice a year, so if you have the car 3 years it's £1060 total! And at the end of 3 years you don't have a set of wheels that you can sell! Edit: Actually set of 19" winter tyres will be more like £800 Last edited by teaston; 07-08-2014 at 02:00 PM.. |
