Recommended Non-RFTs?

I just got word from my dealer that my Continental RFTs -- with a mere 18,000 miles on them -- are worn to the point of replacement. (My car is a 2013 328xi sedan.)

1. Is it normal for these tires to wear out with so few miles on the car? (Granted, I drive in pretty harsh conditions -- snow, ice, highway stop-and-go.) Is there a BMW number that I can call to report the situation and ask for some help with the replacement costs?

2. Is there a non-RFT that you can recommend that would offer a more comfy ride? The run-flats are much too firm for my taste. I presume I would need to buy spare, too, and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on whether a space-saver would be sufficient and where I could get one for a reasonable price.

Thank you!

1) I'm at 20k on my RFT, and I'm in the market for new tires.
2) I used to have Pirelli p7 cinturato and they were absolute crap. I'm going to be going with michelin pilot sport a/s 3 Y-Brand soon enough here. Great reviews, all season with a sporty edge to them for summer driving.

Do you want all season rubber? If so, the Conti DWS are apparently the tits, although I've never run them myself. If you want dedicated summer rubber, Michelin's Pilot Super Sports are impossible to beat.

Dealers recommend replacing tires when they get to 5/32 rather than the wear bars, which are at 2/32 (IIRC). So you really have several thousand miles...

No they are not I have only experienced a flat tire once in my life and if I do have one I'll just call BMW roadside assistance.

Michelin PSS or, for something more left field and overlooked, Vredstein Vortec.

Ditch the RFTs. Hard, noisy, wear unevenly, less grip due to inflexibility, heavy, acn't be repaired . Horrible.

For those who are using non-RFTs, do you keep a spare in the car? Full size? Space saver? How much do those cost?

Thanks for all the great info!

I have all season continental DWS for my "winter" set up and Ill be using the stock run flats spring/summer and early fall.

I have no complaints with the DWS tires, I had them on my previous car and aside from my f30 I have them on my 12 forester.

Looking back, I should have gone with winter/snow tires... with that said you cant go wrong with the Contis DWS +1

could no longer deal with the RFs. Mounted Michelin PSS (235/45-18) on my summer 18 in sportline setup.

Still on my snow tires/wheels for now, so no reports yet. However, I think my -1 snow tire setup (Michelin Ice 17 inch ) feels better on the car than my 18 in Conti Rfs so I am ditching the RFs, once and for all. This generation RF is better than those in the past but they still
S-U-C-K, imho.

Looking forward to great things from the 18 inch PSSs. If you can deal with having non RF tires on the car, I doubt there is a better choice than the Michelin PSS. My wife's G37X has the Conti DWS all seasons mounted and they are great but I wanted true summer tires on the 335i.

Currently running on A/S Contis DWS, I don't keep a spare in the trunk, If I do get a flat I'll call BMW road side assistance.

I'm going to use the stock run flats for my summer set up until I ride them out, I heard/read a lot of good reviews on the Michelin tires, Deff. going that route when the time comes.

I need to replace my rear oem all season conti 225/40R18 tires at 12000 miles. Tires are made of chocolate apparently with the way they just melt off.

Are there any benefits to Michelin PSS besides the handling?

I'm at about 5/32 on the stock Pirelli P7 run flats on my '13 328ix with 25k miles. I'm not unhappy with the performance, but any other of you with x drive go with non RF's?

I love my Pilot Super Sport for summer. Amazing grip and ride quality!
I love my Blizzak (WS70) for winter. Excellent traction and handling, wonderfully dependable.
Neither are RFT... just keep a small Slime pump and Spair setup in the trunk. I also have AAA and BMW Roadside assist anyways. I won't worry much anyways. I've had a couple of nails/flats in the winter... Just pulled into the gas station, pump it up full of air (very slow leak usually...) and make a B-line straight to my nearest Costco for free flat repair. Haven't had to use my Spair yet...

we have winter tires mounted on separate rims so one of them is the spare in the summer and visa versa in the winter.

Skip the run flats. They suck and wear out fast. Had them on the soccer mom van and dropped then at 14k. Spend the savings on the BMW emergency kit or a tow truck if you get a flat. Can't wait to drop mine after this summer.

Going with Michelin Super Sports.

How much weight savings is there going from RFT to Non?

I've got 7k miles on mine, but they still pretty much look like new.
Again, I do like the fact that I can keep going until my destination or other safe place in case of a flat tire. Probably not an issue most of you guys in NA have.

does roadside work with non-rft tires? I mean they offered run flats so you can drive yourself to the dealer..now they are inucrring additional cost because you went with aftermarket non-oem tires.
