Well, thats the problem, BMW's new steering is no better than Audi's. Thats what used to stand out the most about BMW in the pass, the steering feel. Now, I am not so sure what stands out anymore.

I purposely signed up to say this guy should be fired, or at least share his payment from Audi with us. I feel this way for the following reasons;

1) Complaining about 19-inch rims??? Guess what, the sport line comes standard with 18-inch rims
2) Complaining about the "conservative" leather trim option in the test car...well then try a different 3 series. there are a dozen different colors of leather to choose from
3) "For those willing to forego these for a smaller, lighter, more agile car, it’s time for a four-door 1-Series." This sentence makes it sound like he does not prefer a larger 3 series. Well good for him, BMW cares more about the majority, such as myself that prefer a larger car.
4) "Given the manual’s lesser efficiency and equal purchase price, is there a point to it? If you have to ask this question, then no, there isn’t." This sentence makes it sound like he is criticizing the manual. Just because the automatic gearbox is arguably the best ever made doesn't mean there is no point to getting a manual. I purchased a manual because I enjoy controlling my car.
5) "the tested 335i lists for $55,745. Seem like a lot for a compact sport sedan?" Why don't you go price out an s4, since you clearly say it has a better engine

I can go on and on. At then end of the end, it is clear he did not set out to write a review. It was a roast.

I just got the car and I am in love. I thought my prior car, an AUDI A5!, was a decent car, until i tried the new 3-series.

Don't believe a word this guy says, try it out for yourself.

It is curious how some reviews love the steering and some dislike it. I think it is very fine.

Sorry all, but I feel like I have read a different review.

The steering hardly takes a battering here - he merely makes the point that he thinks he would prefer non-electric.

Similarly, his point about the there been 'no point in having manual transmission' seems to be evidently sarcastic. As the reviewer says, he asks the question 'only out of journalistic obligation' before going on to explain that his only quibble with the MT was a slightly sticky 2nd gate.

I would urge people to read the review for themselves before judging - I thought it was quite balanced. There are plenty of journos giving this car 10/10 right now so this review seems relatively low-key, but objectively it reads like a "7/10" to me - it's not a bad review.

I suspect a few 335i owners might like this review less because it makes an unashamed case for the 328i, but I suspect the rest won't care (and quite rightly too) - they each offer something different so you 'pays your money and you takes you choice'.

Anyone else read this review and find it OK?

I usually dont read The Truth About Cars.com articles, but this one was very well written, not bias at all. It actually hit all the points dead on, there is not one point in the article I do not agree with.
BTW, aarena, the F30 335i has optional 19" rims.

Yep. I had a similar reaction to you. Seemed like a fairly balanced review, and do think he prefers manual transmissions. Frankly, a lot of what he has said has been echoed by others, whether professional reviewers or others on this forum. I would also say he gave a 7/10...maybe even an 8. The review doesn't really effect my view on whether or not to get this car, although it is causing me to lean a little more towards the 328 (already was, but barely) if I don't do a 180 for a hydraulic steering equipped X1.

I read alot of reviews good and not so good, from "professionals" and consumers. So I found the best way to judge the new 335 for myself was to go drive it. I found everything about this car to be amazing. The looks are astonishing. The way the interior was put together was amazing. And the way it handled on the Autobahn, WOW! There was power to spare. I've never reached 140mph so fast and it was steady as a rock going thru the curves. I couldn't deny the joy this car gave me as I drove it. My wife and I were smiling from ear to ear for a straight hour while cruising through Germany. So I placed an order. I feel buying a car is a very personal choice. BMW can't please everyone.....some people are just to picky. But I was sold. I think reviews should be taken for what they are and then go find out for yourself. And from my personal experience from building engines alot more power can be achieved with a six cyl rather than a 4 cyl further down the road if one would feel the desire to do so.

I picked up my 335i last week and I had it out on the highway this past week. I've driven the competition and I can easily say the 335i is still tops by a long shot. What a phenomenal car!

Single car reviews are a bit of a mixed bag, I prefer the comparisons. Ive followed car and motorcycle magazines for years, and one thing I found very consistent is that pre-conceived notions play a big part when driving a car or riding a motorcycle by itself. When they compare cars back to back, and record numbers, things come a lot more into focus.

For instance they may complain about a cars steering, then when the drive it back to back with its competitor, they notice that it steers a lot better! Its the same thing with lap times and acceleration times. Sometimes a car feels like it handles great, but its actually just easy to approach its limits, where its competitor may be several seconds a lap faster but a bit unweildly at its much higher limit. Which ones handles better? Well if you take that faster car and drive it as fast as the slower one's limit, it feels like a relaxing cruise. But driven on its own, the faster car is criticized.

I've only driven a e90 once so I cant really compare the steering to the f30 but I can compare VW/Audi vs BMW f30. I currently own a Gti and have only been driving VW and Audi's most of my life.

I can say the f30 steering is a lot more firmer with more road feel than any Audi that I have driven.

I thought my Gti steering had a nice feel of the road then I drove the 335i and then went back into my Gti and I was like what the hell is this! a Lexus??

When I first got mine, the steering was my biggest complaint, I really thought it lacked feel. Now I've had the car 2 months and 3k miles, I've grown to really like it. In fact I now prefer it in Comfort rather than the heavier feel in Sport. Any other owners had the same experience?

I guess at the end all it matters is that do you like the car or not. I'm still reading Audi forums (habit from Q7 days) and we've seriously considered A5 before pulled the trigger on 335 and tons of people bitching about Audi's and they wish they have chosen BMW or MB over A4s or A5s. We've loved our Q7 until to the point it was costing us fortune to deal with issues. Would I go back and buy another Q7? Yes in a heart beat. It had issues and it still does but it is one of those unique SUVs out there and we loved driving it. Is 335 an outstanding car? No but I can't help myself to come up with a lame reason to go drive it every time I have a chance (already made two trips to Starbucks this morning even there is one in a walking distance). Once I'm in the driver seat I feel like I'm in a different world. Forget what others say, if you like it go get one and enjoy it. If you really base your decision on reviews. I guess Ford Escort is the car to get since it has amazing reviews lately.

making the transition from a E92 to the F30, the steering has improved tremendously! I feel like I can't even begin to compare my f30 with the e92.

here's my cliff notes version review comparing it to an audi a5

POSITIVES
-the manual transmission is mind blowing (at least to me). I almost regretted getting a manual because i was never able to always have perfectly smooth shifts in the audi, and since the audi was the only manual i ever drove, i figured you just couldn't shift a manual as smoothly as an automatic. However, a passenger can't even feel that i am shifting in the BMW. Very smooth transition into 1st and 2nd gear.

-Seats are much more comfortable than my audi and feel richer

-Technology package is very cool (although I didn't get navi in the audi so i can't compare

-Much smoother ride than the audi. not sure amount the handling since i haven't pushed the car its limits yet

NEGATIVES

-although the engine is quick, as of right now, i prefer the naturally inspired 3.2l audi. the power was smoother through the rpm band

-exahust note is nothing to brag about. might get the m exhaust

-steering feels weird. not sure if its because i never drove a rear wheel drive car before

OTHER COMMENTS

-i haven't yet property tuned the premium sound system. the bang & olfusen in the audi just worked, no tuning required.

overall, i love the car. haven't thought twice about owning any other car. the technology is this car is very impressive

Don't believe a word this guy says, try it out for yourself.

How is anything he says any different that what you're saying? You're pissed off because the reviewer's opinion is different than yours. And on #4 you completely missed the point. What he is saying is that if you have to ask if there's a point to a manual, then you don't get it (that manual is preferred by purists) so there's no point in a manual for you.

I didn't read a complaint about the 19s. He said they suit the car style-wise, then he said they're a rougher ride than the 18s. Put 19s on a Lexus, a Honda, a Mercedes, a Deloreon, a Mazda or a Lambo and you're going to get a rougher ride than on 18s, all else equal.

The word conservative is an adjective. He used it to describe the black leather, which I think most people would agree is more conservative than red leather. You're taking him to task for word choice? Or is it because he simply bothered to comment on the interior colour? If he said he loved the conservative black leather, you would have no problem with it, right? He did point out that the leather isn't much different from the leatherette, and he's right.

In #3 you just assume you're the majority. And even if you are, he's not paid to write about what people like you and me want. There are hundreds of guys who review cars and they all bring their own perspectives. if they didn't, there'd be no point to their reviews because we'd only ever get one perspective. And that's all it is anyway, a perspective. We're allowed to have one of those too.

On the price issue, you've been completely presumptuous. He doesn't say a s4 is a better value. He just says the BMW is expensive. For that matter, the Audi is expensive too, but the writer didn't even make that comparison.
