I wish there was a Bimmerpost Badge...

...so when we take our rides in for service, they'd see we kinda know what the hell we are talking about...at least moreso than 99% of their clientele.

Just dropped my car off for the ASS coding and Sport Displays (not being in US units) and threw in the Limp Mode for good measure since I had the joy of experiencing that last week.

Thanks to F30Post, I had the knowledge of exactly what could/needs to be done for the ASS as well as the print out of the SIB code and full procedure. SA scoffed at that.

Then I tried as tactfully as I could to explain the Limp Mode, while probably not coded, was a faulty thermostat, yadda yadda.

Walked away feeling like I just pissed the guy off by trying to tell him how to do his job.

You think they'd appreciate the 1% of our kind over the 60% of snobs who come in with no humility thinking they're better than everyone else.

Trust me they like the ignorant part of their clientele a lot more than the 1% who knows wtf they are talking about. They can't BS us and that pisses them off to no end.

For everything I buy I always research the crap out of it and I'm generally a lot more knowledgeable than the salesperson, at least on this particular model. That's my engineering background as opposed to their sales background.

You bimmerpost sticker would serve no purpose as 99% of them don't know the existence of this forum.

That would also be an assumption that just because you were on a forum you were knowledgeable...which for the general internet population is a bold assumption.

If you didn't piss the SA off then you didn't do your job... They are all type X people who you have to drag to water, then shove a funnel down their throat and pour the water in to get things done right... I tell then everything down to the mechanic I want them to use haha, I had one guy lie to me flat out so I called, reported him to management and bmwna and the next time I was in the dealer he was the valet instead of SA... He doesn't like me much but it's his own fault...

Long story short, keep it up and I agree lets get a logo going!

I'm friends with my old mechanic, and the stories he tells about people coming in and explaining to him what his job is because they read it on the interweb is actually pretty awesome. He'll have rednecks marching in demanding that they fix problem X because that's what the internet said was wrong, then asks them if he wants them to fix problem X (which isn't broken) or the actual problem.

There are plenty of ignorant and negligent service people out there, and they'll usually appreciate a heads up on what they're looking for, but I usually try to give them the benefit of the doubt before telling them how to do their job.

I do agree. I do not want to be the guy telling them how to do their job, but it doesn't instill me with great confidence when I bring up something like ASS and they think I'm asking them to disable it. Or when I mentioned the Sport Displays and they insist that it can be configured in the i-drive menu.

At the end of the day, I crave someone who knows infinitely more than I do. Kinda like going to the doctor.

But I also know that every idiot with an internet connection and google thinks he knows more than the professional. This is why I do go in there with some level of humility so they don't write me off immediately. I have a close friend who is a Master Tech with Ford and he tells me some great customer stories as well. I don't want to be someone else's story.

Just to follow up - my SA just called me for an update. He wasn't the one I dropped off with this morning and he is generally much more personable.

Anyway, he was telling me they haven't had many requests for ASS coding and the last instance was 45 days ago and was a 5 series. In that case, it could only be disabled permanently. So I asked him about SIB's and if he had a way of looking them up. Pointed him towards the SIB 12-15-12 which I was referred to in another post. He pulls it up and was amazed that he now had this info bulletin for the ASS coding. (The SA I dropped off with scoffed at the printout when I handed it to him). So my SA says he's attaching it to my work order and it will make the job much easier for the tech.....this is essentially all I was aiming for initially.

I was a little surprised when he said, "Oh, it looks like you won't have to pay for anything either!".....I was surprised because I never intended to pay for this even though from their POV, this was "elective coding".

So it looks like I'm with the loaner for the night...should've opted for the 535. I got an E92 328. Oddly enough, this is what I previously drove, but man oh man, going from an F30 335 to an E92 328.....it's amazing how different it feels all of a sudden. I miss my car.
