My car has 15% all around and it’s pretty dark..but I haven’t gotten a ticket for my tint (yet), Wife has TWICE when we had our 2014 Optima EX it had 5% on rear and 15% on the front, she also had gotten a ticket on her RRS because of dark tint... that had 5% rear and 15% front and that truck was black so the dark tint made it a lot worse...She hasn’t gotten pulled over for tint again because the windows are a little lighter now. Our 2017 Optima has 20% all around and the Tesla has 20% all around...I’m still riding dirty with my 15% tint.

One of the tint shops that I've used said what you drive and how you drive can have a big effect on whether or not you get pulled over for tint. Makes sense.
I live in IL and always stay legal at 35% all around (I've gone 40% a couple of times). As mentioned earlier IL allows a 5% variance to allow for factory tint so you could go to 30% and still be legal. |

I was stopped in rural NY for stock tint in my E46 (he let me go after nosing around), but I think the tax-man-in-the-cute-uniform was mad because he didn't get me on his radar for speeding. Murf |

that stinks. He was probably using it as an excuse to see if you had warrants or had any other reasons to look into your car further.
At least you didn't make LivePD! |

There was a bit of sense to that back when pickups and vans were mainly used as work vehicles and were a small part of the overall automotive market. That hasn't been the case for at least 20 years now, but it's not in the interests of either the auto or petroleum industries or the politicians they pay to support their interests to level the playing field.

I agree with Bill. But also messing with the market is the 25% duty on foreign made trucks. Thus Trucks & SUVs became the cash cows of Detroit. Which Pols will protect over....

Don't generalize - yes, it is a thing. It WAS a thing here where I live (in Quebec) until recently: https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/...-officers.html

That cop didn't work in Vermont. https://www.thrillist.com/cars/natio...in-every-state
Or New Hampshire. I live about 20 miles from a notorious speed trap, where there's a 55 limit that drops to 30 at the town line, with a cop pretty much permanently occupied handing out tickets. |

2. Ticket quotas, as was previously noted, aren't a "thing" here in the USA. What is a "thing" is that supervisors know on-average how many tickets should be given out during an officer's shift. If an officer consistently is below what should be given out, then he/she might get scrutinized as to what they're doing while on-duty. But that's it, and that's not a "quota". |

https://www.cnn.com/2013/06/26/justi...ses/index.html Polanco says he encountered an unwritten rule that officers are expected to bring in "20 and one." That's 20 tickets and one arrest per month. But it was tough to get anyone outside the department to believe him, because NYPD officials would always deny there were any quotas. They still do. https://www.npr.org/2015/04/04/39506...licing-lingers Six police officers in Whittier, California have taken a stand against ticket quotas, and now they will have a chance to tell their story to a jury. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Howard L. Halm last month found sufficient evidence to believe the officers have a valid claim. https://www.thenewspaper.com/news/52/5280.asp |

I've never been too concerned about my tint just as long as my mirrored shades are more reflective than the ones the cop has on.
