According to bmw.de, the 320d is 10 kg lighter than the 328i (1495 vs 1505 unloaded) in manual transmission form, 25 kg lighter in automatic (1505 vs 1530) and the 330d is 30 kg heavier than the 335i (1615 vs 1585)

Current BMW engines can use up to 5% biodiesel. No reason to expect that to get worse.

I've been holding out for a diesel X3 for over a year now. Not sure I'll last much longer.

You probably are not seen much at your BMW store, but I bet if you buy that brand new engine, you'll be seen like never before. That's what happened to N54 buyers; I see no reason why the same won't happen with the new diesel engine.

Well, you do live in Maine; there's no snow shortage there. It's one of the few places I think an SUV as a DD makes some sense, if only for ground clearance and towing ability. But it's still worth it to keep trying.

Today was open house at BMW's main engine plant, here in Upper Austria (Steyr). Besides many future X5 test mules, a 4er Coupé mule and several upcoming Minis, i saw the following in one of their lots:

It seemed to be a US version (mph-Speedometer, orange side markers). Due to the single-pipe exhaust it seems to be a 4-Cylinder - maybe it's gonna be the US version of the upcoming 325d in Europe (2l 4-Cylinder Twin Turbo with 218bhp)...

wow, that is a good catch and find. too bad you didn't get in closer and get the VIN, then we could search for that on bmwvin.com

edit- also, 328d would make a LOT of sense for the American marketing scheme

Ok waiting for info. Scott26? Detroit? Manual transmission? Release date?

update. canada will be getting a diesel xdrive starting production in july. if it follows the formula for xdrive here, there will be no manual. no info on a rwd version for canada, but if it comes in manual rwd in the states i'm going to buy from an american dealer. it will be interesting to see how they price it. if it's going to be a rebadged 320d from europe, the 320d xdrive is 2000 euro cheaper than the 328i xdrive.

A four cylinder diesel, cheaper than the 335i (hopefully) and I'd guess a roughly 45 MPG EPA highway rating sounds like a more appealing choice financially over a gas car. Probably something people weren't able to justify with the 335i/335d choice.

280 ft.lbs will still make it a decently brisk car in real-world driving situations.
From my viewpoint, it isn't just the great MPG, it is the sheer grunt from very low revs. I just love the feel of driving my twin turbo diesel. I could see myself in a 225d except that my 123d has only done 45,000 kms.
