Anyone have problems with Pure Stage 1 in California?

Thinking about upgrading my stock 2013 F30 335i by getting Pure Stage 1 turbo. The only problem is that I live in California and I am concerned I will fail the visual part of a smog test and be forced to replace it with stock turbo.

Any of you in California with Pure Stage 1 have problems passing smog?

Just curious...what does the "visual" part of a smog test consist of in CA? Here in NC, they connect to the OBDII port and check for "Ready" status on all items. Since the turbo is extremely hard to see what with the lower engine compartment panel and all, would they go in with some sort of mirror or scope between the right fenderwell and the engine to check your turbo and downpipe?

They use the OE housing I believe, they just replace the turbine wheel/housing

Yup, sold them my core after going Dinan Big Turbo so they can mod it to Pure Stage 1 turbo unit and resell.

Thanks for the great feedback guys. I am a newbie to upgrades and mods so I don't know the ins and outs of it all. I have done some research on the subject and a few smog technicians explained the inspection process whereby they do a close visual inspection of the engine. These technicians have reported that if they notice an upgraded turbo then it is an automatic failure of the inspection.

Pure Turbos have stated on their website that their stage 1 turbo looks very similar to stock but just wanted to know if anyone in California has had any problems.

Just curious to see if anyone has actually passed smog with Pure Stage 1 turbo.

Thanks again!

Dude unless there's someone in Cali literally taking apart components of your car and inlet to squeeze a scope camera down there to look at the turbo to see if it's bored out even then he won't be able to distinguish between a stock head unit vs a pure stage 1.

It looks completely stock. Drives completely like stock on oem flash and down pipe. This cannot possibly even be considered a mod anywhere that's asinine if they say it fails emissions on oem flash and oem DP. What if your oem turbo blew and you somehow had a shop sell you a pure unit for $200 bucks and it's all legit. What we can't put aftermarket "LEGAL" aftermarket parts on cars that are carb legal?

You'll be fine man.

OEM Turbo, OEM Turbo-fold

Not possible to determine they've been modified visually...you'd have to either remove it or scope it

I'm considering it as well... I'm also PWG. Let us know how you like it! When are you planning on getting it installed?

Just an FYI...if you're EWG, I'd recommend going straight to PS2 as you'll realize more of a power bump from stock.
