Car and Driver upgraded 335i engine

More Power From the Turbo Six, Not That it Needed Any

Tuners have proven it time and again: the twin-turbo BMW inline-six is capable of more than the factory-provided 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. BMW is now ready to admit as much, apparently, and has given the engine better intake breathing and higher boost pressure for new output of 335 hp at 5900 rpm and 332 lb-ft from 1500 rpm, with overboost providing quick bursts of 369 lb-ft. A specifically tuned exhaust system is promised to provide a “deep rumble with a focus on the low-frequency sound range.”

Transmission options number one; the sDrive35is will be available only with BMW’s seven-speed double-clutch transmission. Here, it features a dual-mass flywheel to handle the increased power. The programming is also unique to the model. Gear changes can be effected either via the console selector or wheel-mounted paddles. Launch control is part of the package, as well.

Sounds good, although I wonder how much power it will really make, considering the 335i already makes nearly 330hp at the crank.

Let's hope they don't make the 335i a double-clutch auto only!

I still have doubts as to whether or not we will see this engine in any 3er before F30 drops. My guess right now is no.

If the 335i does not come with a 6-speed manual I will be looking elsewhere for a new car. (G37) Good Job BMW

I grew up in Germany, drove stick shifts all my life, recently a few auto's, but I would take a DCT over a 6-Speed without a second of hesitation. To all DCT haters: Drive it, then judge it!
And btw: 6-speeds are getting less and less because they cannot keep up with the tourque and use more fuel in EPA cycles to my information.

Another note: the 335is is confirmed and coming in March.

+1 After driving stickshifts all my life, I completely love the DCT. Already had a Audi with it for one year, after which I drove the Z4M coupe for 2 years with stickshift. I am so happy now to have DCT again in the 335i!

You are correct regarding the fuel consumption, because of the 7th gear, it drops the emission norm. The future is unclear though. BMW developed a fantastic 8 gear automatic which was said to be the successor of the DCT as well. Recent articles however showed that DCT will stay, but only in M-cars... the future will tell

I don't know what you mean by a six speed being unable to handle the torque? It's the other way around. Yes, manufacturers have been able to built DCT type transmssions that CAN handle great deals of power, but the development has been more involved than a traditional 6 speed manual. (i.e. the PDK gearbox on the 997.2 turbo was delayed in part because of this very reason.)

And, like someone else pointed out, clutchless (pedal) transmissons improve fuel economy in part because they have a taller 7th gear. Porsche is strongly rumored to be releasing an optional 7 speed manual on their MY2012 991/911. (This will likely be debuted at the IAA, Sept 2011.)

I am sorry but the 7 speed DCT is no good, and i drove it, and my friend has an M3 with it and the manual is just better, the dct is good for older people or someone that cant drive stick... Who goes out and gets an M3 and in auto anyway? Its like going to get a Z06 auto The only time i would get an auto is on a 1200+ hp drag car with a 3 speed powerglide

With the release of the Z4 35is BMW will be offering only one transmission; the DCT. Our understanding is that the manual 6 speed Z4 (specifically the clutch) can’t handle the torque that comes with the engine upgrade in the car.
