335i 8AT upshift POP/BANG sound
I gotta admit, the best part of this car aside from the power and heads up display, is the bang sound from the exhaust after you shift up a gear with the 8 speed auto. It' just so freakin awesome.
I wonder if there is a way to make it louder... Sounds so .

I love the bang. In sport/sport + its can get really violent.
With JB stage 1 the bang is much more intense.

Trust me, it makes the car that much more fun to drive. I agree, I'm so glad I got the 8AT.

It's definitely a nice feature with the sport auto. I love the way it cracks off the shifts.
I drove a 640i today, put it in sport+ and it sounded no where near as good as a 335i gear shift in sport+. After putting several miles on the 640i I really had no hesitations walking away from it and back into my 335i. |

if you want slightly louder sound, basically turn your car off completley then go under the drivers side exhaust and you ll see a wire connected to near the tip of the exhaust. Just disconnect the wire, tuck it somewhere or just let it dangle and voila, now both your exhaust flaps are always open and thus sligthly better sound under normal driving.
just FYI the flap opens under heavy driving but its closed under normal driving. So with this mod you get the louder sound under a soft foot too

I think in the previous versions of the 3 series the actuator was different and you couldn't just unplug as you do with the F30. You had to rig wires to hold it open.
I think some people did the same for the F30, not sure why. I've had mine unplugged for a few thousand miles with no codes or issues. |

Correct, no errors, not even codes using the stage 2 JB4.
When car is off the actuator opens so that's when you'd want to uplug it. You can verify by looking in the driver's side tail pipe. If you listen close enough you can hear it close as you stop the car. I think it closes when you start it. There is a thread or two on the subject around here if you feel like looking into it further. |

I did a exhaust similar mod and it only lasted about a week. The drone between 55-65 was really bad on my 335i. I couldn't take it anymore and switched back to default.
Also, while unplugging doesn't trigger any dashboard lights you will still throw a set of shadow codes that are visible to techs. IMHO, the safest way to do this mod is to remove the little U shaped spring and use wire to hold the flap open. It's really easy to do. FWIW, I have done a similar mod on my wifes X3 with an N55 and it has absolutely NO drone at any speeds. Her exhaust sounds a bit better than what's on our 335i. |

I've heard people say they "think" shadow codes are thrown but have you actually seen them or heard first hand from someone with an F30 having them? Could just be speculation. Regardless, I can't see any issue with an unplugged actuator as far as damage to your car. It's only function is to keep the car quiet from what I understand. |
