Why won't (can't) my dealer get me a production number?
So I negotiated my deal two months ago with my dealer for delivery in Munich two months from today. Four months total lead time. He has yet to put the order in and I have no production number. I can understand him taking his time to put the order in two months ago... no rush. But now airfares are shooting up, and I'm really reluctant to book a trip until I get a confirmed delivery date. Why is he delaying? He says that BMW won't let you put the order in too early because then the car is built too early. But that seems idiotic... if they know the delivery date, wouldn't they just schedule production to fit it? I suspect he's waiting for more dealer incentives to kick in that he can pocket, or something like that. Am I being lied to, or should I just relax? Help!

Definetly sounds like he has no allocations for the car you want.

Production number
Thanks for replying. This is for a 328 Sport Wagon, which are starting with 2014 model year in the US. He tells me he'll have a number on Wednesday, when his manager is in the office. The story just doesn't make sense to me.

Most dealership CA have access to the SpeedNet system that they use for ordering cars and should be able to see a allocation and its assoicated production number. Based on that they can modify the car to yoru liking and then give you that production number and also mark the car Priority 1 - Custoemr Sold.

From what I understand an ED car still takes an allocation but BMW gives a new one back to the dealership. For regular orders the allocation is gone for good. My dealer went to some computer system and fetched a list of cars and got me a random allocation, which he then changed to my own specs. Maybe your dealer didn't have an allocation available?

If that is the case then he should have a production number.
