Build Date

Hi Guys, I know I have touched on this before, but just wondering if anyone else has experienced similar confusion with their build date.
Ive had my F30 in the service centre the past four days having some issues sorted.
When they plugged my key to their computer it went through all the standard stuff about my car, when I noticed the build date of 8th August 2012, so I queried why the plate says build July 2012, but there computers and all my paperwork says August 2012.
They are baffled and have management looking into it, Seems a bit weird that my car could be stamped a build date even before it was physically put into production.

I reckon it was a mistake. Somehow, July build date plates were still in the production line, placed in the tray (or wherever they are placed for the car) and it was attached to the car without anyone noticing. Just repetitive 'robot' (even by humans) style work. Shame about true QC of the car. Worse mistakes have happened.

True, as insignificant as most might think it is .. If its meant to be Aug 12 Build like I was told from the start, then they can fix it :-) a month is a month. and you are true about worst mistakes have happened. Like the steering thud issue that is progressing getting bigger.

I looked in the engine bay for my build date and couldn't find it (that is where it was on the X5) - is it on the iDrive menu?

On the F30 it is inside the drivers door towards to bottom, left hand side.
Havent ever seen it in Idrive before, not on my F30 anyhow.

Build date in door decal is meant to identify the build date when looking at parts in microfiche. Its printed with your VIN and identifies the way BMWAG looks at your build month/year.

In your case my guess would be that your car was built with a least one part that was before they started August 2012 production.

I've done plenty of searching on www.realoem.com and have not yet come across parts that changed with 8/2012 production. 7/2012, YES, but not 8/2012. There must be something, somewhere in that parts catalog that changed in 8/2012 that is not in your car.

My guess.

Definately sounds plausible.. but the service manager appears to disagree. Time will tell.

My understanding is the build date is at least when the marriage of chassis & body come together. Basically, when the car is built and can (almost) function on its own.

That's interesting because my vehicle was only signed off on for production at the start of August 2012

Hi David, you were correct. I have just had an email from Auto Classic today, advising it was mistake and that BMW AG is sending over a new Build plate to be installed in the next two weeks.
