Yeah, I ran the wire to the trunk just like in the radio, but I had the wire hidden under the door sill.

Smartphone is actually a great idea. Since the car does bluetooth, the best would probably be to control the unit via sms text message. My boss made an arduino based sms reading device that displays a text message on a LCD display screen he mounted to his office door. Purpose is to display status updates rather than update outlook calendar or use post-it notes. He got a truphone prepaid SIM card, and actually doesn't get charged for incoming texts.

Would require a little bit of upfront dev time, but would be a fun project.

That's pretty cool, potentially set it up for remote starter as well.

Only concern is how much power does it take? If it uses more than the dash cam itself, then it'd be better off to leave it running all the time.
