I am not understanding the point of this. Why not just cut off the muffler and replace with straight piping and use the factory tips with actuator. Would be way easier and end up sounding the same and on top of that is reversible.

If you do that you have potential for massive drone as you are eliminating the hemholz chamber.

I'm sorry but that is just plain wrong... This does nothing to save you from any excess drone. It would be the same as a muffler delete. The Helmholtz chamber isn't doing anything if the perforated sections are welded shut... It needs an entrance to function and there is none. The resonance in the pipes is traveling right through out the rear of the exhaust the muffler is completely bypassed the way this is setup resulting in the same exact thing as if the muffler was just deleted completely. They reason I say it is because I have tried it in my past 3 bmw's no drone as long as you don't screw around with any resonators/h or x-pipes in place, deleting a muffler won't add drone. This whole process just seems excessive and not reversible (not sure why anyone would want to reverse it though). |

Now look at the 2nd smaller hole in chamber 3. It leads into the Helmholtz chamber and it's what reduces drone drastically. DO NOT PLUG THIS HOLE. Or essentially it is just like straight pipes. What's the point if this? Well for one it's cheaper then what you're talking about with just hacking off the muffler and straight piping it. You retain the stock muffler. Looks better and CLEANER. It's about 20% louder then a M performance muffler so it's just right and not obnoxious. I mean do what you think is right for you, no one is making you do it.

Side note: I had to take a drive around the block to pick something up after I cut the muffler off and trust me, there is a VERY big difference between this method and running straight pipes. Under light throttle you barely hear the exhaust note, which is far from possible with straight pipes. |

Yes sorry from left to right is 1-3. That's exactly the pipe I was referring to. I know it was hard to see from my original photos.

Anybody try only welding shut the holes on the driver's side (US) and keep the external valve functional?

awesome write up! you're a brave soul.
one of the Infiniti guys did this to his G37 exhaust (imo one of the best sounding entry level V6 engine exhausts).....very similar set up with an additional tube going from canister 1 into 3...i wonder if thats what creates a nice growl sound.

Anyone try this on a stock 328i/428i muffler? I had considered getting the 428i MPE but no way with that price tag. I've considered other options but there's such an unknown factor with the final outcome. I don't want to drop $500 plus for a muffler but I'd love to get a better sound.
Thanks and great write up and videos! |
