Hey dudes. Let me know if any of this custom work is still going on! My 328i 2013 has halogen lights and I want to somehow get angel eyes and whiter lights in them... If it is even possible?

I'm still also experimenting with etching different designs on the rings to add a little more zest over the standard single and double lines, but i don't want to go overboard and rice it out. I've got some classy OEM looking etch lines in mind that i need to vette out. The higher M cars have cooler looking etch lines in their rings that i borrowed some ideas from, and can hopefully improve on. The last pic on the bottom was my rough early concept prototype that i cut by hand using a bandsaw, and it was used to do fittings inside the stock F30 halogen housings. But now everything is done with super precision cuts using the CNC laser. The rings are now perfectly cut and etched down to the precision of a tenth of a mm It'll be another month or so before i get them on my car and will be able to take pics, but the rings started out looking like the one's blueaudi18 did (similar to the M4 hexagon concept rings), but it evolved to now where it will look a lot like the rings on the 2016 LCI LED headlights. PM me if you are interested in making you a set. Last edited by squidlyboy; 01-20-2016 at 01:35 AM.. |

Are we doing this again?
The lights we built last year are great and the pain it was to get them right has not been forgotten but these do look good. |

waddup brutha!
When the LCI headlights came out, and i saw the hockey sticks (like the M4 concept hexagons), i looked at mine, and thought, damn, these acrylic covers are so skinny and tiny. It actually always bothered me a little bit, but i was glad just to get rid of the halogens. Now that I've had time to think about it more, and do some prototyping, i can whip out a set of headlights in lickety split. Doing a new set of quads only takes a few days now. Plus with laser cutting/etching technology being more readily available, you can really do some cool custom designs with them. I'm making the new rings extra WIDE and extra FAT, to give it a more mean aggressive look. I had to put this aside to work on another project, but now that i'm done with that, i need to finish up these new lights. Once i get it on the car, i'll post some pics |

Squidly would a Pre-LCI set of rings for my F30 be something I could order? Would LOVE this look from your other thread: Still thinking (almost daily) about taking the plunge and ordering some OEM Xenon headlamps and start the project... ! Would need a weeks holiday to do it though

Interesting, the "3D" rings are really starting to pick up with the aftermarket scene the past year or two... but nobody has managed to get the etched pattern on the ring as beautifully as you have. (Especially the most OEM looking one with many lines.) In fact most "3D" AEs don't have any etching on them at all. Do you own the laser equipment, work at a plastics company or just pay out of pocket?

Its currently too expensive to own, so I get it done through a service (which btw.. is pretty pricey in its own right). But like you have noticed, the precision of a laser to etch a pattern on acrylic is second to none, so that is the best (only) option I have.

Sorry... been completely slammed the last two weeks. Had to go to Puerto Rico for a competition, then got right back on a plane to Utah for spring break ski trip in the mountains i committed to earlier this year. I just got back last night.
However, since today was a work holiday, i did spend the day getting more done on the lights. I didn't like the original etch pattern (too plain), so i re-did the acrylics from scratch finalizing on this design. I made these extra fat / extra wide so as to almost exaggerate them - they look better when the rings stand out. Promise won't re-do them again ... My schedule is just bunching up for me right now, so i don't have a lot of extra time currently. I'm hoping i get these on the car in the next month. |
