Smile 120C or 250F....!!

My question is !
when i start pushing my 335i to the limit its temp start to rise to 120C, and when its reach 120c the engine just wakes up...the exhaust note just change to the better...the problem is i don't know if the engine temp. will stop increasing, thats why i stop pushing the car.
So the question,,when the temp. will stop increasing and whats it highest limit without harming the engine irreversibly ?
Did anybody notice the same improvement in engine sportiness with temp. above 120 C??
Thank you

It will rarely pass 120 even in the dead of summer, at least on mine. Drive it like you stole it. That's what these engines are meant for.

IMO you shouldn't drive the car hard until it's warmed up. Don't confuse the coolant temp for the oil temperature. Does the F30 display oil temp? I had to enable it via coding on my car. It takes me about 5-10 min of actual driving (not sitting at lights) for the oil to warm up (greater than 180 deg F).

This is of course speculation...but in line with what I've read around the web from pretty knowledgeable owners.

what lines of code did you change to get it to display the oil temp?

The guage is for oil temperature. That's the way BMW designed and built it. This is the first car I have had that showed oil temp instead of coolant temp. I suspect this is a better indicator of engine status. Mine runs between 1/3 and 1/2 on the guage and never goes above regardless of how hard I am driving or the outside temp.

There was a thread a while back about the temps. It turns out that the sensors increase temperature when the car detects that you are trying to be economical, but drops off to 90 or so when you are driving harder.

This corresponds with my own experience in a 335i.

Did it on my S4 with VCDS to display some sort of track mode with lap timers and oil temp in DIS. From ^, sounds like your car already has it from the factory! They're both important info to know, but I agree that oil temperature is more so.

There should definitely be something on CAN accessible via OBD2, maybe a P3 gauge could show you this?

My experience as well. At first I thought it was just more airflow because I was moving faster but pushing it uphill on a mountain pass and the temp went down. Anyone know where that thread is - like to know more about this as I never came across this in a car before.

I don't think the radiator fan runs and the water pump might not even function if he car is too cold. The oil temperature depends on whether you are in sport, comfort or Eco mode. Eco mode runs the hottest for fuel efficiency while sport mode runs the coolest.

Correct me if I am wrong but after 250 F I think the car goes into survival mode and will throw a cooling error so if you drive it like you stole it and don't lose power, then the cooling system is functioning properly.

i know that already..that you shouldn't push the engine while its cold, my question was after its warm up and its in the optimum temp. and you push it hard the temp. finally will reach 120 and some times 123 to 125c. Is the 335i engine familiar with this or not?

Maybe you're not pushing it too hard! mine will reach half the gauge and eventually will increase slowly to 123 and 125....!

This is really strange, sometimes my engine behave this way other time its not..
look..when i push it too hard with the air con. off with strong braking many times the gauge read 122 to 125 easily!! the strange thing is when i push it harder while the air con. is on!! it will keep the temp 120c longer!!
Is this related to air con. fan or something???

The thread was a couple months ago, the topic was the service manual's description of the cooling system in the car.

You are absolutely fine. Oil temperature runs much higher than coolant temperature. The gauge is oil temperature, not coolant temperature.

Wait for it to warm up before going into sport mode or pushing it hard, as you should with any car. Mine's hovers around 230-250... I drive it like Nick Cage in Gone in Sixty seconds..have never seen it go above 250 and i'm always in the higher rpm's.

This is my 1st BMW and the 1st car I've had with an oil temp INSTEAD of a water temp.

Is there anyway at all to even see the water temp? (340i)
