I happen to like both designs, feel that BMW infotainment is better and that Audi has a cleaner more modern look (not surprising in a new design). Both are decent quality (not of A6/5-series standard, unsurprisingly). Spec makes a lot of difference - I thought a RS5 i sat in was lovely and a boggo A5 pretty grim and something that I really would not wish to spend time in. A M3 I sat in the same day was just as lovely as the RS5.

NB. Perhaps a S4/5 is close to a RS, in which case it would be very nice.
Exactly the kind of thing I have heard too and I just don't get it at all. I didn't think the s4 was special at all inside. It's nice for sure but whilst maybe being a touch more modern the quality really isn't a lot different.

You sat in it for 3 minutes. I got both of them on my driveway now. Just for ambient light itself I would make a jump. Actually I did!

If it doesnt make itn for you then thats it. 3er still hot set of wheels!

Well a half hour test drive. It is 100% down to the individual and your preference for the ambient lighting is fine, as is your overall preference for the Audi. My point is whereas an m760i for example undoubtedly has a higher quality cabin than a 340i in this case it's preference.

I assume tongue was embedded firmly in cheek when you typed that - surely nobody would make a change involving so much money just to get different lighting?!!!

Options you're having to pay for to make it "better" than the S4

S4 is a fair bit more to start with though, so swings and roundabouts.

I guess this proves it's all down to personal taste and requirements. I have an SQ5, my son in law to be has a new shape 530d MSport. I think my car is much nicer inside, better seats, better tech (esp google maps sat nav). I do like the fact the idrive now incorporates touchscreen so you can use whatever works best at that time.

Think the 5 rides better (on 19s versus 21s on my car) but Audi is more refined.

The good thing is we have a choice and Audi are there if you can afford the premium (tongue firmly in cheek chaps - really for those that call it an expensive Tiguan!)

Agree with those that say C class isn't close...

The SQ5 is a step up interior wise from the S4, looks really nice. Do wonder why Audi don't put leather on any of the dash parts.

I have a new 530d (courtesy car) and don't think the interior is much better than the 3 series. It's the same soft touch plastics, there is a bit more gloss black plastic which I don't like at all, it's got the Dakota seats (unlike the x3 for example) which aren't brilliant, and the same instrument cluster. The ambient lighting is nice and the idrive screen is massive but it's certainly no 6 series which feels like a massive step up, even on an old model.

Yeah i definately think it's down to personal preference. Out of the two pictures below, i prefer the 5 series interior. However, everyone seems to like the exterior of the new 5, and it just doesn't do it for me.

Funny how pictures are very deceptive. That last picture makes both interiors look pretty horrendous. Way too many lines and edges in the Audi, strange wave of plastic behind the screen of the 5. To be honest when you look at them like that, they both just look like acres of cheap plastic....

That infotainment screen in the Audi looks just as bad as the merc's stuck on Halfords fake iPad thing they have for me. Fair enough it folds away but who ever has it hidden when they're not using the car? Just a minor issue and it wouldn't stop me buying one, but people often moan about how the f30 screen isn't incorporated into the dash, if anything the dash is designed around the screen more in the 3 series, and its a good looking one if you have Pro Nav

Don't think the Audi one folds away, the S4 one I looked at certainly didn't appear to.

Surely it does? It does on the A3. If not then it is as bad as the Mercedes afterthought

No it doesnt - but it works perfectly and is in just the right place.

Can you explain why the BMW one is more intergrated - apart from having angled sides, it too is perched on the dash...

As I said above, I regularly drive a new 5 series and I dont find the interior as good to use - or the screen looking any more integrated in day to day use.

I do find the Virtual Cockpit very good to use though....

btw this is 5 series vs A4/S4. A6 would be more suitable contender.... Audi will show new A6 this year (i think). Look at what they have done in new A7 interior as it would be , more or less , the same in new A6.

Now BMW looks really old-fashioned. Before you all jump and say that too many touchscreens ..... they added tactile feedback and all reviewers seem to be happy with tech.

At the end of the day some people love BMW (me!). Some people love Audis (weirdos). Some greedy people go both ways.

Neither is right. Neither is wrong.
