Playing music from USB drive - recommended file structure?

I am about to transfer my Mac OS X iTunes library to a USB flash drive (32 GB, mini SanDisk).

In iTunes, all songs are MP3. Target USB will be formatted w/NTFS.

What is the recommended process to copy iTunes songs to the USB drive? What should the file structure look like on the USB drive?

Just copy/paste your Music folder. Job done.

Thought you had to use FAT32?

Nope, the car will read NTFS USB sticks. Very useful for 64GB sticks as most are formatted as exFAT32 and the car will not read them. I could not format my 64GB stick as normal FAT32, windows refuses to do so.

You may need to update the Bluetooth/Media software from www.bmw.com/update to get NTFS support.

Rich1068,

Thanks for the advice. I am just wondering about the file structure on the USB drive:

1. If the entire Music folder will be copied via paste

\Music\iTunes
.. then folder for each artist follows

Thanks!

Actually my reply was a little sloppy.

I mass copy/paste the contents of the Music folder (ie all the artist folders) onto the USB.

Success! I copied contents of Music folder to the SanDisk 32 Gb mini USB drive. File structure:

\Artist1
\Artist2
...

Inserted the drive in the USB port inside the storage compartment between the front seats. Within a few minutes, all artists were identified (plus albums, genres).

When playing music, the album art appeared automatically.

There you go

Do you guys have an older/different iDrive than in the UK? Shame if you do because you can play video off a USB too. So all those little extras you get with an album from iTunes can be played too.
