BMWs have more ticks than a coon hound. When you pull the oil fill cover off you can hear the valves. You'd have to compare it to another to determine of it's out of the ordinary.

if your engine is in good shape, the only ticking sound you would really ever hear is the fuel injectors. as for the one in this video, excuse my french but your engine sounds f*cked.

Any chance you can take a quick video of the noise when you take off oil filler?

My n55 definitely doesn't sound like that with the cap off. Christ...sounds like it's low on oil

At 6 seconds you hear the tick I'm concerned about. When you open the oil filler you can hear the tick/snap better.

Car is not tuned and only has 27K. Still under warranty, but would like to find out more before the dealer says its nothing.

Do other N55's have same sound with oil filler off?
What year is your vehicle? My previous N55 equipped MY13 335 developed a ticking sound later traced to excessive connecting rod bearing wear. The engine was replaced.

Don't accept the first comment from the dealer that the sound is normal. Ask SA to speak with BMW NA about performing oil analysis to detect metal particles (above the norm).

Uhhhh OK.

I'd say take to the dealer before that ticking bomb under the oil cap goes off.

What oil are you running?

This noise seems to be very common amongst N55's, with many reports of people taking it in to the dealer and being noted as "normal.' There are other reports of people thinking it is vanos bolt issues, rod knock, lifters, etc.

However I can only find one documented case of an engine being replaced due to bad rod bearings. Does this mean that all of the people that have this noise are doomed?

your engine actually sounded quite healthy.. until you took off your oil filler cap lol! but with the oil cap on, all you hear is fuel injector tick. definitely sounds healthy more or less. although my engine is an N52, I will be posting a video of it idling and with the oil cap off tommorow to compare.

When posting your videos- be sure to note if your engine is up to temp and what oil you are using..Good for comparison

Might also help to note the mileage that's on the engine. I'm only at 14.5K on a 2015 model.
Oil is BMW synthetic and has been changed twice. (and will be again at 17K)

It's almost certainly just the echo from the vacuum pump.

We had lots of discussion in the UK on a similar noise with the M47/57 diesel engines. Nothing wrong at all, simply the echo from the pump, as it was mounted on the front of a cam shaft, just ahead of the filler cap. A bit like a quacking duck in the diesel.

There are videos of the diesel sound track, it is very similar to the sound on some N55 engines. Vacuum pump is lower down, so sound will be a bit deeper.

I'll have to listen to my N55 when I've got it running, as I did with my M57 diesel. I had the same sound as other diesel users, with the filler cap off, nothing wrong with the engine.

Talking

I've just listened to the OP's video and one for a 335d. I hear the same sound source.

The diesel is definitely the vacuum pump.

yes, i believe this would be most accurate if everyone posted videos of their engines up to temp. (95c*210f - approx 110c*240f )

If you are hearing the vacuum pump chirping away, engine temperature is not too critical.

Will listen to my engine when I get home.
