after reading this thread.....it seems like its rather common for these 328's to break down after delivery.
for those who havnt seen my thread....my car threw transmission/drivetrain errors an HOUR after i drove it off the lot (only 80 miles on the odo) service adviser told me it was a Megatronic failure. Not sure what DME is though.

I got it, too, last week. "Drivetrain Malfunction" message poped up and i lost most of the engine power. Took it to the dealer. Both Vanos solenoids changed. It seems to be ok so far. 19200 km on the car.

The exact same thing happened to my car 2 weeks ago. The car all of a sudden lost about 90% of it's power, and a messaged popped up that said "Drive Train Malfunction". I had it towed to BMW. Got it back the next day, and now it's fine. They said the car needed a software update. Kind of strange being that the car had only 1000 miles on it

I have had this error twice in the last month or so. My car had at least a quarter tank of gas and it is summer here with temps 70-90F. Once it happened at sport mode the other at comfort.
Dealer so far has said theres no code so theres nothing to fix. I am patiently waiting to lemon this car, its been in the shop almost 20 days since delivery in June 2013 for various issues |

With ~480 miles on new 335i I've had two "Drivetrain Malfunction" errors, both while accelerating at freeway speeds in sport mode. Pulling over and restarting the car fully cleared the errors both times. The car didn't shake/vibrate or have any other issues other than switching to limp mode until the restart.
Took to dealer last week, SA said codes indicated wastegate issues, they opened a case with BMW and are currently replacing the turbo. No additional details yet but I'm scheduled to pick it up in a few days and will dig into the details with the SA. Not thrilled about having engine surgery on a brand new car, but we'll see how it goes. Silver lining: the loaner is a 5 series.

However, if they are not too bad, try to accept some other form of compensation. Like an extended warranty. That's reasonable given the circumstances. Each every stinking time I have a minor repair done, something somewhere on my car gets scratched, or damaged in the process. So, sometimes tis best to leave well enough alone. Anyway, having major problems this early in the game is good reason to insist on extended warranty. |

I got the drivetrain malfunction last week. Restarted the car and it started shaking pretty bad. Restarted a couple more times until the engine felt normal. The check engine light was still on but I took it straight into the dealership. They said that it was mis-firing due to bad spark plugs. They are currently replacing spark plugs, wires and injectors. I get my car back on wed/thursday. I got downgraded from a 328 msport to a 320 loaner and the butt dyno definitely feels a difference in power.
Feeling really crappy about this situation as bad spark plugs/mis-firing cylinders could be the outcome of bigger problems... |

It happened again last night and this time I drove straight to the svc dept without turning the car off. They were able to pull some codes and it sounded like cylinders misfiring. More to come...
I've noticed a lot of carbon deposit on my tailpipe lately and an occasional loud noise. Maybe this is why my mppk hasn't felt as fast lately. |

Was planning on picking up a 328I for my wife early spring. Not so sure after reading through this thread. Seems to be a hell of a lot of cars having this drivetrain malfunction, and it also seems to be from ALOT of different part failures.

I got this twice. First happened when the car had about 20000 km on the odo. They changed the two Vanos solenoids. Then, it happened again last week, at 24000 km. The dealer will have it checked, on Monday. I will keep you posted.
I SOOOO wanted to keep this car. Not anymore. Last edited by F16; 12-07-2013 at 01:56 AM.. |

The intake solenoid
after 3 days of diagnosis, the problem is in turbo Intake solenoid valve (not exhaust) which jamming and stuck (as they described the problem), but the valve not in stock, it will arrive from Germany in 10 Days, the dealership found no problem in moving the car (They told me that it may just decrease the performance a little bit and will not harm the engine by any way), i'll keep you informed.

don't worry the BMW is a coward car, by the mean that it will worn you for any slight performance deviation or any thing that may cause a problem in the next ten years , so if it did not till you to stop, don't worry
this car is the new shape and design and all of this errors and faults is normal and it just some time to get them all solved Last edited by elborhamy; 12-07-2013 at 06:18 AM.. |
