Is the part number 61312250696 for the "raw" CF shift knob?, I don't want the shiny clear coated one, thanks.

i dont know i didnt buy it from mod bargains...
and thats where your probably getting it from ... since the number ur giving me...
but they're pretty legit i bought a few things from them and always top notch quality oem usually, if not better. And at $140 can't go wrong i paid like 220 back then from a bmw dealership with shipping and handling. Sent them a message to see if it is the same one.

yea thats the one...
buy it from either or **********s has great customer service in case anything goes wrong... they fucked up in my order, well they took way longer then they should have because all the items i order were at different warehouses so they had to ship two different packages. They sorted it out and it was shipped the next day. But look around see if you can find it cheaper best ive found so far has been $140.

Warning: it is a torx, not a hex! If you go at it with a hex, you will strip it and end up sad.

Don't know the exact size, but you can get a small torx set at any hardware/home improvement store for less than $10.

Thanks. I didn't use a hex in case I were to strip it, just didn't know what it was called. Smallest torx I had was labeled T10. Guessing a T8 or T9 should do the trick. I can update once I figure it out.

The aluminum shifter looks better with your burl+aluminum trim. Obviously, different strokes for different folks.

nice write up! to get the tranny lever out initially, is it as simple as unscrewing it?

I think theres a lot more to it for the tranny lever... i wouldn't put my two cents in since i haven't done it, but welcome for anybody that has done it or seen it done to comment on the procedure.

so am i reading this correctly...you don't have to take the lever out? does the whole silver surround come off when you take out the black middle part and the one screw holding everything together?

The silver bezel is held in place by one Torx Screw, Removing it is all it took.

I'll attach a pic of the screw
--

Process is simple.
1. Wedged a flat head screw driver into the Gap of the Black piece and wedged it out. It was held in place weak glue.
2. Remove Torx Screw from silver bezel
3. Install M Performance CF Gear Shift
4. Screw torx screw back in
5. Remove 3M tape from replacement black piece and stick on.
6. Step back and admire the job

What are you talking looks elegant. I'm kinda anxious for the m3 in mineral white or mineral gray with red seats and ceramic brakes. Time to save up until is release that will probably be the upgrade.
