Mine has diesel noise, especially on startup and especially when pushing on. Internal ASD masks the sound somewhat.

It was explained on here somewhere (had a search but can't find it) that the feeling of lag with the 35d, especially when the engine is cold, is more to do with the gearbox than the turbos.
I had it when genty pulling out a side road first thing in the morning, i think its the gearbox protecting itself, though it feels like turbo lag. Being in sport mode with help, though only when the engine & gearbox are warm. I've now solved the issue with a tuning box, don't get the slight pause between putting my foot on the accelerator and getting power to the wheels now, i don't think it'll damage anything as i drive a cold car with mechanical sympathy. |

The car makes boost instantly from a standing start, no other turbo charged car I have driven does that.

I must be kidding myself too because there's absolutely no perceptable lag from my 30d standard drive. In fact I'd go so far as to say it's a little too keen, but that could be to do with the Steinbauer!

I need to smoke what the OP smokes as it would certainly save me a ton of money if I had the same thoughts!

My current courtesy car is a 318d GT and I cannot believe how poor the interior quality is compared to a 5 series.
BMW should be ashamed, nothing about the car is premium, huge difference. What is the point of that spoiler that goes up and down when you press the button???? |

If the OP thinks the 335d is bad and its probably one of the best diesels on the planet money can buy - then I dont think he would be satisfied with ANY diesel. Each to their own, stick with your 4 pot.
And he’s missed the obvious one about the crap handling of xdrive. Is he is sure it was 335d that he actually drove?

Hmmm - as a former 435d owner, would say the engine is quite refined and not noisy at all. And never experienced lag...! Very accomplished car. But yes, clinical. Hence an M4.

I can't perceive turbo lag on my 330d, and that is after 120k miles in a Golf GTI (so I know what it feels like).

My 335d (E91) has no perceptible lag.
No noisy, diesel or otherwise - it was one of my original complaints, as it was quieter than my previous E60 530d, although the 5er did sound nice with quite a lot of induction roar and a muted growl from the engine. My 335d is just quiet, no ASD of course, just the impression of things happening under the bonnet. Not a thrilling car to drive at normal speeds, even though Sport mode puts a smile on my face. However, get into 3 figures and it really comes alive, and it progresses from being merely quick to awesome. Shame you can't drive like that round here! I also drive petrol cars, from a 3.5 litre NA down to a 1.4 turbo/supercharged one, so I know what petrols can do. I do however think that the years of experience gained with turbo dirty diesels has rubbed off on the petrol engineers. I drove a 1.1 turbo Skoda last week and it performed surprisingly well for its small size and power output. It did run out of breath when it was pushed, but what do you expect from a "cooking" car! Don't ask what my 335d replacement is going to be though........ |

35d will be noisier with two extra pistons rattling about.
Turbo lag is inevitable with any turbo charged engine. Does the 28i not have a turbo? What falls off a cliff? Unless you are driving in manual and then fail to change at the appropriate revs? The acceleration falls off a cliff at 155mph. I tried to clean my rear view mirror today but then realised it was just a spec of an image of a 328i disappearing.....
