I had a bit of a moan at the service desk, as I'd been told something different when i'd called in to check and the guy there said that until recently, they would accept cars up to three months or 3k miles before due.

It may be a local dealer choice they got away with though.

Ok, so mine had its second service this morning as planned. Dropped the car off at about 8.10am but was surprised to be told by the chap on the service reception that it wouldn't be ready until "somewhere between 1pm and 2pm" which was rather longer than I was expecting (had thought the service department closed at 1pm on a Saturday but looks like they now work until 5pm). Anyway, when I queried it he said they could probably have it done for between 12 and 1 so I said that was fine and, once I'd had a nosey around the showroom (no salesmen to bother you at that time on a Saturday morning!), I headed off into town.

At about 10.15am the dealer called my mobile and my immediate reaction was they've found some additional work they want my permission to do; however, my second surprise of the day was he was ringing to say the car was ready for collection! So a clean bill of health with no advisory work suggested or required (hurrah!) but when I picked the car up I enquired how much the bill would have been had the car not had the service pack. Over £500 was the answer which if correct seems an awful lot of money for a service that took them less than 2 hours to complete; ok there are some filters to replace as well as doing the oil change but even at main dealer rates £500 seems steep for what they did and how long they spent on the car. Therefore, does that sort of cost sound right for a second service on a 335d?!
When I was a service advisor the techs used to love the Inspection one service, they could bang through them and that's how the made bonus. Sometimes the car would be ready but I'd hold back from calling the customer otherwise it was hard to justify the labour charge!

My first one was 24k miles.
My second was 42k miles with new discs and pads all round - M Sport. Sadly BMW don't offer this comprehensive package anymore.
Those were the times the pack was worth it.

Is the servicing schedule always mileage related?

My six month old car has from the off said it needs servicing at the two year mark which will be at approx 16k miles with no commuting

Cheers

No, It's either time or millage. Whatever comes first.

My car will also be at approx 16k after two years. So time takes over as apposed to mileage

I called the dealership who will be supplying the car who confirmed that they can take the car in for a service 1200 miles early or when the service light goes amber, he then said the first service for the 335d was about £340 (seriously) - I think the only way this will work for me is if I service it early and treat it mean :-0

Not quite. Some service items such as fluids (brake, coolant) are time based, others e.g. oil are condition based which translates as mileage.
