Insurance: Diesel v Petrol

Our car insurance is due for renewal and when putting the reg details in an on line quote the car was shown as a 335i luxury so I phoned the company and informed them that it is a diesel. After checking with underwriters the quote increased from £290 to £440 as they stated that the band increased from 41 to 50. I checked my reg docs and the car is described correctly. I checked my renewal quote which also described the car as a 335i so I phoned them and informed them of the mistake which they accepted without a premium increase.
The first company informed me that it is probable that the showroom put the wrong information into the system.

No idea why but diesel insurance has always been higher for us too by a hundred or so.

I wonder how risk is calculated between say a 335i and 335d? Both are desirable. May be they assume diesel covers more miles.

My 335d insurance was £270 last year with Aviva (inc £60 cashback), and that was for 16k miles a year. I can't imagine a petrol version would have been much less than that.

For some reason car insurance on a diesel does tend to be a little more expensive I've found. A few years ago the best quote I could get for a 320d was £320 on comparison sites, but when I changed the car details to a 335i out of curiousity the quotes were as low as £275 .. crazy!

Yes I think it's because Diesel engines are more complex and expensive to start with compared to the equivalent petrol one.

Likely more to do with risk and accident statistics.

Years back diesel was cheaper to insure, were a minority and more likely used by folks who didn't put performance first. Less risk of accidents. As the first performance diesels came along, diesel was still cheaper to insure than an equivalent performing petrol. Sales go up, risks change based on accident data.

Wouldn't at all be surprised if 320d accident statistics show it is a higher risk, than say a 335i.
