E90 335 to a F30 328i
So my F30 328i sport line is currently being built. I am going from a 2011 335 m sport to a 2013 328i sport. I love the acceleration and torque of my current 335. Plus the exhaust note is sexy!! I decided to now go with a 328 due to lower lease payments and better gas mileage. (Gas mileage on my current 335 is awful). I am just hoping that I don't mis the power of the 335. From what I hear it's not a very big difference. I test drove an automatic 328 x drive. Can't really go by the test drive too much tho. I can always do a slight tune as well as an exhaust. Anyone go from an E90 335 to a F30 328? Thoughts?

I've driven F3x 328i, its good too. But if you going down from 335 to 328 and you still have doubt in your mind, then better check it again. There is considerable difference between 328 and 335 power. Make your mind before you get your car delivered. |

If you do the BMS stage 2 you'll actually have more power and torque than your current ride, plus 150lbs less weight or so. You can turn it off from the steering wheel as well if you want to temporarily go for MPG.

I was very happy with the 328 automatic I test drove (other than the transmission!)
It's downright fast, up to 100mph, didn't take it any faster. Sure, the 335 is faster, but I don't think you'll feel like it's a big step backwards. The main thing people complain about is it doesn't sound as good as a six, but to my ear, most new cars are damn near silent anyway. |

I am sure it will be fine. An m sport exhaust will fix that!

I think you'll miss the visceral nature of the 335...the kick in the pants, the sound, but in the real world/speed you won't.
I love the 335, but after owning it for several months I realize I could've lived with the 328 just as much. It's so rare I get to fully enjoy the power that the 328i is probably the better car. But when I get too depressed about it I just floor it and the sound makes me happy again. #firstworldproblems

Exactly! As great as the 335 is. I think the 328 is a little more sensible. Especially living in NY. Can't really fully enjoy the power of the 335i. Luckily the new 328 is alot more aggressive then the E90 328.

It would have been nice to have E90 335 or M3 obviously but that's how it goes sometimes. I'm sure you will have a great time in your new car. The in car tech in the F30 is a HUGE step over the E90 in my opinion. Congrats! |

I went from an '08 E90 M3 6MT to a '12 F30 328i w/ sport auto. I don't miss my M3 at all. Initially, this was just going to be a cheap lease for every day and I was going to buy a used M3, 911, or Cayman for fun but I really love this car. With the 8-speed transmission, the torque to the wheel is comparable to a 6-speed auto E90 335i. I've raced an E90 335i and beat him (but it was a terrible example: shitty exhaust, tinted taillights, big rims, etc.). Below 100mph, my car is not much slower than any 135i/335i. The main difference is that the 335i has a much better exhaust note and more shove above 100mph.
By the way, I average 26.3mpg compare to 16.1 in my M3. |

Good to hear! Not much difference below 100mph. I think I can live with that lol. The 0-60 is less than a half a second difference. (which bmwusa stats). As for the exhaust, I know I am gonna wind up doing the M performance exhaust.
Gas mileage and lower lease payments are the two main reasons why I am not going for another 335

You're going to have a lot of run with such a light car, a 50.0%/50.0% weight distribution, and 225 square tires. Trust me! |

Nice to hear a lot of people talking up the 328! I myself have an F30 328 and sometimes I regret not springing for the 335, but mostly for the 'prestige' of it rather than the need. As stated above, the 328 is barely slower on 0-60 and under 100mph and how often do you really REALLY drive that fast? Not enough to justify the extra cost which is why I made the decision I did.

the 328 is lighter and there is a little bit more balance. The car does rev very high even in normal driving, when pushed it's very noticable. Power disappears quickly and there is an overall thin/tinny sound/feel as the RPM's climb. as a daily driver the car is great, it performs well and does everything you would expect. alot of the emotion of the F30 is hushed and the potential to tune is diminished as they are already pulling alot out of the 4. For the viceral overall feel it is not close to the 335i and it is not meant to be. I've been driving the 328 for a little while now while my car is in the shop and I can tell you that the gas mileage is not that much better in the 328 over the 335. When I was looking at both the 335i and the 328 at the time of purchase, there was not much difference in the insurance premium.
You have obviously already made your decision to go with a 328. Do you have buyers remorese? Why do you feel the need for reassurance on your purchase? It's a great car and it meets your preceived criteria of being better on gas, and less on insurance. If you are already having secong thoughts and regretting not getting the 335i then this will be a shadow over you for as long as you own the car. I have a 335i and I don't regret not getting the M3. There is even less difference from the 28 to 35 so you need to come to grips with your decision and be happy with it! Kevin Quote:

I don't have buyers remorse. Just wondering if the difference in power will be an issue. I honestly don't think it will be. I am not gonna be racing the thing lol. I just wanted to get others opinions who went from an E90 335 to a F30 328.
As for gas mileage. You say it's not a big difference. Are you comparing the F30 328 to the F30 335? I am comparing my E90 335 to the F30 328. From what I hear, It's a drastic difference.

Interesting take on life. Personally I try to make decisions and move forward without looking too much in the rear view mirror. I certainly would not look for justification from others as that is purely subjective. I have never thought gee, I should have got the 328 and not the 335. I have also never thought gee I really wish I had the M3. I bought what I bought based on numerous factors.

F30 28 - F30 35 for gas milage.
The only person who can determine if the difference in power will be an issue is youeself as that is a personal opinion. Even others that have moved from an E90-35 to a F30-28 will be of no help to you. It's just kind of a silly thing to ask. Hey everyone do you think I will have a problem if I buy a car with less power? Answer: I don't know, what do you think? Something like, is the power loss a big difference? or how is Highway driving with the lesser engin? are questions that can be answered and help with your decision, and usually prior to purchasing. Good luck with your F30 328. Enjoy what the car has to offer and don't keep up the what-if's every time you push down on the accellerator. Kevin Quote:

OP, I saw that you posted about a $550/mo lease payment.
I don't know if you have a special situation such as credit score, or trade in negative equity that got rolled into the lease but I recommend you read up on these forums and renegotiate your lease. Mahzari's post is more in line with what I would expect to lease a 328 for right now. |
