435 gran coupe reliability (first time buyer)

I've read that the N55 is rock solid and I am looking to get more opinions on reliability. I keep my cars as long as I can. My plan is to buy a CPO 2015 with less than 30k miles. Now, warranty would probably expire by 2020/2021 and then I'd be on my own. I've tried to read as much as possible and I'm stuck between an IS350 F Sport and a 435 Gran Coupe. If the reliability is that bad then I'll have to pick up the Lexus.

Probably somewhat of a

Although the vehicle is CPO, getting the vehicle fully inspected by an independent shop will help you make the decision. All 435 GC are built in Dingolfing, Germany.

Definitely can do that, can you elaborate on the fact that it is built in Dingolfing, Germany? I assume the build quality is better that it is built in Germany.

sounds promising, I've also read that most problems start after 50k. I don't drive a lot but I expect to keep it till 100k.

To OP, a few friends have issues with their hard driven Lexus(transmission related), so despite Lexus/Toyota reputation of reliability, they may not expect their cars to be driven like a BMW. Having said that, many mods their BMW and end up stressing factory parts.

My take is that Lexus should be more repair-free than BMW regardless how car is driven, but if driven hard, Lexus can throw a surprise or two despite its rock-solid reliability stats.

Understood, I'm just more concerned with having a large repair bill show up for something that you wouldn't see on a normal day to day with the Lexus. It seems, it's possible but less likely with this model, mainly due to the N55. I think I'll look around and maybe take one to a shop and have them take a look.

Thanks for the advice.

You can enjoy the car till 2020/2021 and then get an aftermarket warranty for your peace of mind.

Top Gear shows it having a 0-60 time of 7.0 seconds, much, much slower than than the BMW:

https://www.topgear.com/car-reviews/lexus/is

On the other hand it gives the 3 series a good review and a 0-60 time of 4.8 seconds.

https://www.topgear.com/car-reviews/bmw/3-series

I agree that Lexus is generally a more reliable brand. The question is wheether the extra reliability is worth the performance drop.

Only you can make that call.

Seems a case of the conventional wisdom being correct. The BMW will be more fun; the Lexus will be more reliable. You're probably going to have a couple of expensive repairs in the BMW; you may in the Lexus but it's less likely. As others have said, decide what you value most and go from there.

That compares the IS200t to the 335d, the IS350 0-60 is about 5.5 seconds, still slower than the 435 but no where near that slow.

Yeah, I'm trying to convince myself out of the BMW but more fun wins.

For me it's more so the fear of a 5k bill repair bill, but then the warranties do exist so, i'll probably go CPO'd then grab a warranty if thats possible.

To OP, since your DD is S2000, neither IS350 F nor 430i may fit your expectation. Do check out a M240i to compare.

N55 is reliable, that being Lexus will be more reliable than a BMW.
If reliability is the only concern, go with the Lexus. Driving experience of the BMW is on another level though

I need a DD family car for myself, mainly to be able to take the car seat.

Reliability isn't the only concern, it's the whole picture, I want the driving experience and am willing to lose some reliability for it, that being said, I don't want a huge bill for something ridiculous but as you said the N55 is reliable.

generally if you keep up with the proper maintenance you should stay trouble free. I think it's pretty similar Lexus vs BMW. but that's just IMHO.

Keep it through the warranty period - then you are likely to be able to buy another extended beyond that. I would definitely do that with such an expensive (to repair) vehicle. Once you can no longer get warranties (usually over 100K Miles) I would move on to the next car.

Mine's is 15 435ix GC. I love this car. Looks great and drives great. I have 25k and not an issue. Only tunes I have are the MPPK/MPE/CP & Dinan CAI.
Plus you cant beat the hatchback convenience. Just my 2 cents

I have 2016 335d GC covered 12k so far without a problem, though I do get some trim rattles in the cabin.
