Bench Unlocked then have to get smog?

So has anyone ever had Bmw lock your dme and block you from tuning? So it looks like if you go in to Bmw for service, they will update your software and prevent you from tuning.

You can bench unlock from certain shops or mail in your dme, has anyone ever done this?

I know when you go back to stock, you have to relock your dme + stock tune.

So that means you will pay $150-250 again every two years to unlock the dme again.

It's starting to look like paying a smog guy $500 or even $600 might be the easier route because that sounds like a PITA

This is what I know... bench unlock is permanent only if you never go back to the dealership for service because if they update your DME they will surely locked it again prevent tuning.

BUT if your just going back to stock and relock just for the purpose of smog then your DME should still be able to be retune once your done and pass your smog.

So don't let the dealer update your DME.
