Eurocup 2016

The second greatest football/soccer tournament in the world starts in 30 days.

I'm cheering for Croatia. It would be nice to see them get into the knockout stages.

Shall we start the discussions?

With the additional number of participating teams, the overall quality of the tourney will be lower than past. Croatia is done, hasn't been the same since Suker and Prosnecki! Expect Belgium to surprise but will fall short to either Germany or Spain. I got no European ties, my money is on France though.

Yeah Suker was a player all right. To think that so many prolific players come from a country of less than 4 million people.... Like I said. If they get to the knockout stages it would be a victory for that little place.

In a few days I will start looking at the teams. Will Germany still be a powerhouse? Sweinsteiger isn't young anymore.

Germany is aging but half the team is in the ripe age bracket of 25-28, so I expect them to deliver. I doubt they will rely on Schweinsteiger at all from a playing perspective, I think they need him more from a leadership standpoint.

Sorry, I am American. Is this the game where everyone runs around that giant field for 90 minutes and kicks a ball around and like once or twice the whole game it goes into that net?

Yes, I kid. I actually like soccer/football.

I'm going to kid also...

Yes this is the game where players actually run for full 90 plus minutes in a game called football where the players use their feet on the ball for 99% of the game as compared to another game called football where in 99% of the game the ball is carried by hand and where over the course of three hours the actual realtime game action totals about 15 minutes.

I love American football. It's a very tactical and exciting game but with all the injury/concussion issues I see a growing consensus that says the sport may be approaching a decline.

But I digress.

Love the Germans. Watching the last World Cup final was awesome.

Yeah, I agree the World Cup is one of the greatest spectacles ever. I played soccer for nine years in my teens and was pretty good, but now the sport I follow the most is hockey, which I would say is the most rigorous and demanding. I'm around a lot of soccer fans who watch all the various club games, COPA, etc.. but none of that compares to the fantastic atmosphere that the World Cup delivers...much more than the Olympics.

I agree with all this. Except the part about liking American football. Can NOT get into it. Or baseball or basketball either really. I realize it is largely because I never really learned their nuances (except baseball, which I understand pretty well, but it's just boring af to watch.) I'll agree with jgoens about hockey though. That is the one sport I have always loved and always followed. Growing up around Detroit didn't hurt.

Hockey is the one sport that all players of the big three North American sports agree to as being the toughest.

Good job to Wales! There was a time when it looked like Slovakia was going to pull ahead but it was one or the more luckier goals that I've ever seen that put Wales ahead.

Was it 5 yellow cards to Slovakia? I think they will end up short a player in at least one occasion within this opening stage of the euro.

The foul/yellow card that resulted in England's first goal... Was it deserved?

Excellent free kick by the way.

Fair ending to the game I think. Russia worked their arses off to make them at tie.

"Football is a simple game. Twenty-two men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans always win."

But I'm Polish, so POLAND FTW!!!

Let's just make sure the hooligans keep the rioting to a minimum.

I remember partying with British football hooligans in Frankfurt. It was pure joy to watch artists at their best in provoking the local German population. Lol.

By the way... Way to go Croatia in their 1-0 win against turkey. That Luka Modrić goal was pretty nice. They dominated quite well.

Good job to Poland. They looked firmly in control in their 1-0 win over Northern Ireland.

I'm lucky enough to be in Lyon tonight.

No tickets for the game though.

We are going to be sitting by the Rhone and will watch the game on the big screen. Have some lovely cheese, meat, pate etc and a couple of beers. Sounds like a plan

Unfortunately it is starting to rain.

Sorry Belgie, viva la Azzure!

I can't see anyone beating Germany at the moment.
