Newbie Question: 225 40R 18 Compatible?

Hi,

Newbie here. I just purchased a 2018 i430 Xdrive Grand Coupe with M Sport Package. As the car comes with performance tires, I need to get winter tires. I found an awesome deal on 225 40R 18, but specs show I should be using 225 45R 18. Will this be an issue, or should I be ok with the 225 40R 18?

Thx!

225/40-18 is more than 3% shorter than OEM 225/45-18.

The shorter tires have quite a few drawbacks, increased wheel to fender gap, less wheel protection, increased speedometer error and the odometer counting more miles than actually travelled.

While they can be used without causing mechanical problems, I also don't advise going smaller with tires.

Going larger is a bit more acceptable. Also, going go-flat (rather than RFT) is acceptable and gives you a bigger range of tires to buy from (perhaps that's what you've already done?)

I'm in a similar situation with a gently used 428i X drive Gran Coupe. Can you tell me whether your X drive came with staggered wheels or are they the same size front and rear?

Stock performance tires were staggered, but I forget the exact size. Got square setup for my winter set, which I just put on today. Got 255/40/18 Blizzak LM32 RFT with Replica rims all in for $1300. I know narrow is better, but the price on the set was too good to pass on.

Oh, I've just spent loads of money on buying a nice car. Now I'd like to cut corners on buying tyres, because I can save a few dollars / pounds / lira / whatever if I buy the wrong size.

Read if back to yourself.

Nothing wrong with saving a bit on tires.. I mean.. he's bought new tires. It's not like he was trawling eBay for deals on used tires. Plenty of people are running 255/40/R18s for a square setup.

Newbie here as well. Just recently purchased a used 340i and I live in Germany so winter tires are a requirement. Decided to go with a new wheel/tyre setup from tire rack. Went with the Sport Edition A10's 18x8 with the 225/45R-18 Blizzak WS80 XL's. Currently installed are 19's with 225/40 R19 P Zero RFT's on the front and 255/35 R19 P Zero RFTs on the rear.

So my question is do I need to get an alignment done or can I just switch the tires myself? As well as any follow on maintenance thats recommended?

First time having to deal with this and didnt find to many things with search that fit my specific situation lol. Everything Ive found so far suggests that I should be fine to swap them but figured Id check with those who have more experience.

Thanks!

DIY is perfectly fine. No alignment necessary - unless in checking your summer tires you notice some uneven wear.

Make sure you check tire pressures and reset TPMS system.

One more thing: I prefer to put some anti-seize on the wheel bolts. Yeah you have to watch the torque but you'll at least be able to get it off in the spring.

Bozos at Bridgestone broke a bolt off last spring - and they were the ones that tightened it 5 months before.

Wake up on the wrong side of the bed bud?! These are great tires and are new. If you want to spend extra dough on narrower tires, go for it. I decided to save a couple hundred bucks.
