You know you are old when....
You remember when half the cars you were driving didn't have synchromesh on 1st gear. You remember Dunlop "Groundhog" cross ply tyres had not yet been invented when first driving. You remember when car heaters were optional. You remember car radios and fitted aerials were optional extras. You remember when you first saw and heard an 8-track stereo. You remember trying out radial tyres, (Michelin X). You remember you had to try Dunlop SP Sport tyres with "aqua-jets". You remember when 5 1/2 J rims, Peco exhausts and racing wing mirrors were the cool options to have. You remember how you laughed when the Allegro came on the market. More? |

In 1970 I was paying less than a £1 for 3-gallons, +Quad Green Shield stamps. Northern Bridge, Southampton, on my way home to Bitterne. I'd fill with £2 worth, virtually filled the Viva's tank, would get me about 200 miles. |

Adjusting points and setting the timing with a strobe light.
Clutches with cables. Repairing exhausts with wire and bean tins. Changing a Ford Escort MK2 engine in 30 minutes - because I could

My memory, one of the biggest advertising gimmicks for a motoring product at the time. Dave has already mentioned the Esso tiger. Stickers with "I've got a tiger in my tank." We used to collect the "tiger tails". Remember having them waving about from a home made aerial on my bike. |

Thanks for this thread, I think I remember just about everything that has been mentioned on here.
I also distinctly remember my late father-in-law saying to me - 'mark my words Alan, we'll soon be paying a pound a gallon for petrol'. But . . . reminiscing's not what it used to be, is it ?

Brakes....
You remember when "good" front drum brakes had two 'leading' shoes. You remember adding 'adjusters' to your wire handbrake cables. You remember when steep hills had sand filled "escape routes". And they were used. You remember your first drive with front disc brakes. You remember your first servo brake system. (May have added a servo to your braking system). |

Along with an egg in the rad if you had a leak, or just removing the thermostat if it was overheating!

For me... that was an Allen Scythe. Horrid things to start.

Cibies were battery drainers... Lucas dynamo had limitations. Those were the days, remember going out with him to set up the lights. Out with a spanner on a deserted country road, tweaking the Cibies. I was a Lucas Square 8 guy, on my Cortina Mk II GT. |

What I would give to have a vehicle with today's power back then. Just imagine, no speed cameras and being allowed to drive as fast as you want whilst drunk. Man you guys had it good. |

I did however go out with a few who did and respectively ended up in ditches, car being totalled or rolled onto roofs by them! Ahem, they were "interesting" evenings, especially when you called the local plod and all they did was come and try and get in touch with local farmers to tow the cars out! Quite bizarre compared to today! When I think back how lethal it all was, but at the time, was just part of being a normal "lad" teenager
